Hi

I have a Garmin Nuvi 760 GPS and I'm pretty happy with it.

On my recent outback holiday I down loaded and installed some free mapping from Shonky Maps.

They are much more detailed than the factory Garmin maps, they cant be searched as such but what I found worked really well was to set my destination with the Garmin maps and then turn the Garmin factory maps off and activate the Shonky maps.

To use Shonky Maps you need some Garmin software installed on your computer, training centre & Mapsource, both are available to download free from Garmin.

Then you need to download Shonky maps at http://shonkylogic.net/shonkymaps/

You can read about the maps on this forum http://www.gpsaustralia.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2525

Even if you don't use the maps in a GPS you can still view the maps on your home computer.

I used to host shonky maps on my domain back when they were in infant stages. Great mapset. IMHO its the best free mapset. T4A is so stagnant, would be great it T4A tracks which were comunity contributed could be released open source so Shonk could incorporate them. Aaanyway....

I actually contributed some of the Tassie Data that is in the shonky maps. The other one that is worth checking out is http://www.openstreetmap.org/ which will turn by turn route on your garmin and are totally free. I have done some development for OSM too and its dead easy. More people should get in on that one. If an area you drive is not in there, fire up your gps, go for a drive and then put it in🙂

I have a few Garmins. They are a good GPS. Can recommend Shonky. My brother helped out on the project.

Check out www.geocaching.com & www.geocaching.com.au when you have the time. You might already have.

Good clean fun. Even better in a VW.

I use a street directory for the city, and a BP travel atlas for the country :-)

Hi Phil

I used to wash my clothes on a rock in the river, but I have a machine to do that now.😂

Wow, I cant believe that 2 VW people had something to do with Shonky.

Geocahing sounds like lot of fun.

On our trip we traveled on the road from Cober Pedy to William Creek, along it we saw lots small stone formations about 100 - 200 mm high, obviously man made.

Could these Geocahing sites?

Probably not....most geocaches you wouldnt know were there. Do a post code search and check out how many are near you. Geocaching.com.au is best site for google map links etc. The boys who develop for that site love their fancy doovers. I used to geocache a LOT but havent for a few years.
