Wondering if anyone's ever had this before.!!???

I was driving our 68 bug to work this morning and out of the blue the whole front of the car started shuddering! It was almost as if one of the wheels was about to depart from the car!
I immediately pulled over and checked the wheel nuts and was baffled to find they are all tight.
I have just inspected further and still cannot find anything amiss....all is present and correct, and it's left me totally confused!

Has anyone else had similar?

The roads were wet this morning, so i guess it's possible it was down to that (somehow??)
I have had the usual wobble in the past when the tyre's need balancing, but this deffo wasn't that. I couldn't have been going much faster than about 50kmh.
Any advice will be gratefully recieved on this!

Hi!

Yeah...work is only a 2 minute drive really....so the car is home and safe!

It didn't do it on the way home at all (dry roads by then...hence why im thinking it might somehow have been connected with wet roads)
Not pulling to the side....will check if the front is level in a mo.

Im about to drive to pick my son up...so i'll see if it does it again. brb!

Seems fine now....no probs at all.

As for drums / discs.... I've read on here that all 68's had discs on the front, but ours is from Germany originally so im pretty sure it's drums all round. Not taken the front wheels off to inspect properly but from first glance it looks to be the same as my 67 that i owned years ago which was drums.

I'm thinking that it's a possibility that the tracking is out maybe...and that in the dry it's fine (although not great for the tyres obviously) and that this morning in the wet it would have been 'slipping' instead. Hope i explained that ok!

now would be a good time to check the front wheel nuts not to tight but not to loose firm when you spin the wheel
jack the front up and try and rock the wheel
👍👍😂🙅🥷😬🤓

I guess could also be slipping clutch due to oil on plate or engine mounts. Both these can cause a judder that will just dissapear.

Are you sure it wasn't just the road surface. That sometimes gets me thinking for a second. Maybe the rain had eroded a portion of the surface. I dunno.

x2 - You may have just been lucky first time.

A big wobble means that something isn't tight that needs to be - you need to find it and tighten/fix/replace it.

Check your tie road ends my kombi did the same thing drive fine hit a little bump and start of the shaking,
I swaped the tie road end's with new one's and never had the same thing agian and on inspection the old one's were shaged.
The best way to check is jack up the front and see if you can move the wheel in n out by pushing and pulling on the front and back of the tyre trying to move the outside of the tyre in and out to feel the movement if there is any.
You only need two tools
Wd40 if it don't move and it should
Duct tape if it move's and it shouldn't

you could also check the front tyres, jack the car up so the tyre is just clear of the ground and rotate to make sure it is not out of shape.

Maybe a wheel out of balance that only shook at a particular speed?

German 1968 beetles probably didn't have disc front brakes... many countries didn't..

I would check the ball joints and tie rod ends...
maybe one came loose in its housing and for some unknown reason its gone tight again...??

I doubt if the steering damper would cause so much trouble...

and i've been driving My beetle for about 2 years without a front roll bar...

I did have a problem with a camber adjuster which sits under the top ball joint.. the large washer I had used at the bottom was too thin and the nut pushed up into the hole, and the camber of that wheel changed at random... lol... there is a mark on the haxagon part of the camber adjuster that should be at the front...
that is how they leave the factory....

If you want any pics just ask..

cheers

this is a serious issue, dont drive your car untill you are sure its safe!!!

jack up the front of the car, sit on the ground and rock the wheel vertically and feel for play, then rock the wheel horizontally and feel for play, if you have play vertically its probobly ball joints, if you have play vertically and horizontally its probobly wheel bearings and if you have play horizontally its probobly steering ie: steering box, tie rod end.

do your wheels have lead wieghts on them? perhaps the wieghts have been knocked off and the wheels are out of balance.

+1 for the steering dampener. My 1500 would do the same thing at random times. (One of the front wheels is slightly buckled so causes a bit of wobble, dampener was worn). New dampener, and never happened again.
Thats not rust, it's ah ... orange primer ... yep that's what it is ...

Have seen/had similar problems with a Type 3 back in the 60s. Was due to worn components in front end (shocks, swaybar loose etc) as well as a few bumps on the road which started the oscillation of a front wheel. Only did it at certian road conditions. Check for wear in all components.
