there are differences in the cranks and cases.

you want a later dual relief case (btw a 1300 case i think also has smaller oil galleries).

the cranks are different as well. an early crank has no leadout from the oil hole on the bearings. this can be added but i think they also have different oil passages as well (i will check that if i get a chance before work).

edit. i checked an early type 3 crank that i assume would be the same as a 1300 beetle crank and it has only 1 oil gallery running to each rod journal vs 2 galleries on a later crank.

if you are going to be racing it you may as well fork out for a aluminium case, it will take a pounding better and you are starting with a new part not a 30 yr old part.

Hi mate. Yes thats why I was keen on the 1600 twin port as a start. The rest can be machined into the 1300. The 1500 from what I understand is virtually identical to a 1600 twin port.

Cyliners are a straight swap on the 1500 for 1600 parts, cept for the head bolt.

1300 will need work, I get that, but there's crap loads of them out there, as nobody wants to use them. Generally, they arent trashed either.

Regards to the alloy cases. Problem is this. The alloy case, whilst it has a crapload of advantages, has one SIGNIFICANT disadvantage.

IT WEIGHS MORE THAN STANDARD CASE!!!!!

That is just rediculous, and no amount of additional strength and heat transfer abilities can compensate for the additional weight difference.

I'm not spending a grand on a heavier part. Not in a car that weighs 300kg. The weight difference alone would increase the weight of the car by over 5%. Sounds picky, but there's SEVERAL 10ths of a second lost with that weight.

I'll stick with the original cases. But I get where you're coming from.

Would also consider single barrel carb setup at the right price.... I dont need drivability. Pure power and torque is all I'm after.
