hey all
was wondering if anyone knows if there was changes 63 to 64 bug
i have a sneaking fealing that my bug although registed in 64 is actually 63 spec because i ordered new brake drums and shoes for it and when they came were wider and didnt fit then thinking maby i got sent 1500 ones compared the new ones against those but they werent as wide as the 1500 ones
so im thinking ive got 63 brakes on my bug. but ive got wide popes nose but 63 roll top seats what does everyone think??

what do i think?
i think that your white walls aren't factory

As far as I am aware, Aussie '63 and '64 brakes are the same. I think it was '65 that the drums changed. Early ones are smooth all the way around, whereas the later ones have the 'spokes' that look a little bit like Porsche wheels.
'63s don't have roll-top seats. The round-top seats (and flat-folding rear seat) did not come in until 1965. The narrow number plate light was replaced by the wider light in '64, although old stock was used for a month or two. Remember that Australian model years began at the start of each year, not the previous August like Germany.
What is your chassis number? Also, what date/year is stamped on the back of your speedo, and on your wheel centres (take off your hubcaps)?
i will have a look tonight thanks for the reply maby they sent me 65 brakes
🙂
ok weird
my speedo says 08 65 so but my dums smooth and the new ones had that spokes thing happening but my car has 1200 40hp so id be guessing that my brakes are in fact 64 and ive been sent 65 drums and shoes and that be why they dont fit. Its regod as a 64 its a bitsa
🙂
mmm not worth much all different bit
ill give ya 500 for it 🤓
Sounds like your engine is correct. The 1200 40-hp was fitted to the '61, '62, '63, '64 and '65 Aussie Beetles, and it was the '66 that went to the 1300 engine. I suspect that the brakes were updated at the same time (so I wasn't quite right before), so yes your '65 has the correct brakes - the smooth 40-hp style that was also fitted in '64, '63, '62 etc.
Where did you order the drums from? If it was the US, I am not surprised they are different. Maybe try ringing one of the Brisbane VW parts shops (eg Micks) and see if they will exchange the ones you bought for the correct, earlier ones.
Have you also looked at your wheel stamps? Take the hubcaps off, and wipe off the dust and dirt just next to each hubcap clip on each wheel (spare too). See what the date stamps are. Another place to look for date stamps is on the underside of the chrome front blinker covers. Unscrew and remove them, and turn upside down to see.
they are already on their way back to vintage havnt looked at wheel stamps will look tomorrow
🙂
