For anyone with a head for numbers - Why is it that the deluxe chassis number should officially be delineated by the number '4' for its model type, however in Australia and contrary to official VW data the number used is a '2'?

I have now bought several Low Light Microbus Deluxes and a '77 version and all feature the use of the number '2' for model type despite all the usual chrome trim, fixtures and fittings etc.

Any suggestions very welcome.
Best regards

All VW Kombi (ie. Transporter) chassis numbers, 1965-1979, start with '2'. This means they are a Volkswagen Type 2.

The SECOND digit of the chassis number tells you what 'version' of the Transporter you have. The THIRD digit tells you the year model.

The usual first two digits seen on Kombis are:

21 - Delivery van
22 - Microbus
23 - Kombi (ie window van with seats)
26 - Pickups
27 - Ambulance (Europe only)

Note that the chassis number is the number stamped on the body panel in the engine bay, left-hand side. Nearby is another similar number, stamped on a separate piece of metal that has been spot-welded on. Ignore this - it's a body part number from the CKD assembly kit. The chassis number is stamped on the body and can't be removed.

A chassis number starting with '4' would be a VW 411 or 412 sedan or wagon - rare, not sold in Australia - not a Kombi.
