Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge about the heater switch on a 67 beetle.

The model i have has the turn wheel down at the base of the gearstick. I've tried turning it both ways but nothing happens.
I've checked that all the hoses are connected and they appear to all be connected up.

My question is: What is the turn handle connected to? Is it a cable or something?
I took the handle and round bolt off the switch...if the cable or whatever is broken, should it then pull out?
There is resistance when i try to pull it out so i'm guessing it's still connected to something?

Its not essential that the heaters work, but if its a simple job then i may as well tinker.
Anyone got any advice?

Thx

Neil

it is or should be connected to a cable that opens the flapper valves on the heater boxes thats if you have heater boxes
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

Thanks for that!

After a better look i can spot the problem now..

Looks like the cable has gone slack where it flips the heaters on / off underneath the car.
Will try and adjust 👍

OK....another question!

I have adjusted the cable on both sides, but the switch still doesn't operate them.
The heaters do work if i hold both flaps open manually, which is great...but i'd like to get them operating on the switch if poss....if not i will just hold the flaps open permanently for the winter and flip them off for summer.

So...am i right in thinking that the cable goes from 1 (at the switch) into 2 (at the back)? If so, any idea where they join up?

Or do both cables go directly to the switch?

I've not looked at the cable at the switch end as i can't work out how to get to it. Any ideas?

I know it's pretty mundane, but i've got some spare time today!! lol
Plus if you don't do things properly then you'll never really learn anything 🙂

It's been a while since I had a 40-hp Beetle, let alone pulled this system apart, so I'm speaking from memory.

I recall the 'heater knob' system, used on all pre-'68 Australian VWs, was ONE cable. It went from one heater box lever at the back, into the cable tube, up to the knob beside the gearstick, around in a U and back down the other side to the other heater box. The bottom of the star knob is attached to a screw mechanism that, as you turn the knob, pulls both sides of the cable up and opens the heater flaps.

I would disconnect both cable ends at the engine, then undo the knurled ring underneath the heater knob. Once undone, you should be able to pull the whole thing out. You may need help to feed the cable ends into the tubes at the back. Take the mechanism apart, clean and grease well, reassemble and put it back. Sometimes it jams and twists the cable U, which might be why it doesn't work.

'68 and later Beetles used two heater levers beside the handbrake, with the right handle operating the heater on/off like your knob does, while the left lever opened rear footwell flaps that your car doesn't have.
