If I have to ask then maybe I don't need it, but then I might learn something, so what's a thermo block?

sits between the oil filter and mounting block so you can run an external cooler with out tapping the case. mainly for type 4s as t1 didnt have a filter as stock.

You can run one on a type 1 if you have an oil pump cover with a take-off for an oil filter. I have one on my 1916 as I tow a trailer full of tools a lot of the time (I am a builder), and quite often on the highway, so I like to help it keep cool as much as I can.

In the first photo, you can see the oil pump cover ready for an oil filter, and in the second photo, you can see the 'thermo block' and then the oil filter. The oil lines run between the push rod tubes and the bottom tinware, and come out above the heater box. You can just see them behind the tappet cover.

No one has mentioned that they are thermostatically controlled, (hence, "thermo" block) it will only send oil to the external cooler when the oil temp reaches a specified
temperature. So, stock cooler only is in use, then, external cooler cuts in when things get too hot and shuts off again when cooled down.

They save you from running too cool if you're running both stock and external coolers but allow that extra cooling when needed.

They usually cut in around 170 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit (can be bought set to various cut in temps, depending on application)

Regards,

Matt.

I didn't know that. I am not sure that mine does that - I think it runs through the external oil cooler all the time. Will have to have a closer look at it when I have it out next.

Jeff,

You can get them as a "diversion" block, with no temp control, merely to divert oil to a cooler. The original poster called the one for sale, a "thermo" block so,
I'm assuming it's a temp controlled one.

Should have a cut in temp stamped or cast into it somewhere (or at least written on the packaging) if it's a thermo block.

You can also run them off a remote oil filter setup.

Regards,

Matt.

It has a ball and spring which is come over by high temp/pressure, allows oil to bypass
the filter straight to the external oil cooler and then back through to the filter.
Since i got rid of my big motor i do not need it now.

Paul
