I have owned my Golf Mk 4 for 5 months, and it seems to have a broken piston ring. What should I do?!?! I have been quoted between $3000 and $6000 to get the mechanic to fix it just by a phone conversation with Leon's motors. Or there is a Golf at one of the wreckers in Brisbane I have been quoted $1500 to buy the engine then another $1500 to get it into my car. I looked into trading it in for a new polo but they will only give me $6000 towards the new one - I bought it for $12500 so thats a big loss for just a few months of driving!
It's just done 170 000kms, and I am located in Brisbane.
It's the 2001 2L model if that info helps
Any advice would be great
Thanks Karina

Karina, i work with a guy who has the same car, and his engine was acting the same he suspected a broken ing but got a diagnostics check done at german autos at geebung and they found it to be an injector or spark issue and the problem was fixed hope this helps. Damo.
This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

Their phone no is 07 38655457 - Fortune Ave Geebung 4034. Yes hopefully it will be something simple and they can fix it for you without hassles.
If the worst comes to the worst and there IS a broken piston ring, an exchange second-hand engine would be the most economical way to fix it. There are lots of Golfs around now, so there won't be any problems with finding parts etc like there would have been, say, 10 or 15 years ago.
Wow, the previous owners got their value out of it - 170,000 km in just 8 years. My Mk3 Golf has 155,000 km and it's a '95 (still going strong).
