Doing it in a modern, fast, quiet, comfortable, economical Golf TDI is cheating! Almost 120 km/h and you're doing just 2200 rpm - wow, modern VWs are great.

Been wanting to do it for years but never have. Maybe next year in the Kombi but I'd need more than one full-up I reckon - aerodynamics of a barn, uncomfortable at 100 km/h and you can watch the fuel gauge go down! Numb bum in the old Kombi seats after a couple of hours too. It would be a different kind of trip - cruise at 80, and stop to look at things and fill up every few hours...

Better way is the Ocean road on the way down as the coast is on the left, but don't rush it and miss the waterfalls, rainforests etc, a very enjoyable trip if you take the time to enjoy our beautiful country and it's scenery, even after the Ocean road the country is beautiful, the people great and knowledgeable and friendly, regardless of where you are there is plenty to see.Cheers Les
