Hi guys and Girls

I recently purchased a semi auto 1970 Beetle for the better half. The only problem is that when I try to engage reverse the clutch doesn't disengage and therefore the gears crunch and don't engage. All the forward gears work fine, reverse is the only problem. Any clues?

Cheers

Check the wire to the gearstick contacts,as the forward gears work ok,I assume the stick moving in the other direction stretches the wire and breaks contact leaving no clutch operation.

Thanks, I will do but reverse is in the same direction as 1st so I'm guessing that it should stretch the wire equally. The battery is old and useless, would a poor voltage cause a lack of action in the system?

Back in the seventies when I serviced a few of these reasonably regularly this was the most common problem,I am sure a slight change of direction will make the difference between contact or no contact.

pod i`ve got to finish this thing one day

i have the same with mine,i think it has something to do with the shifter adjustment, and it is slightly going in between the right gates in the box. as i can get it to engage without crunching sometimes 🙄

Yeppas there are a few issues here, try and give the car some gas so it can create enough vacuum to disengage the clutch, then quickly throttle off and put into reverse (works 100% of the time 80% of the time).
check that cable and make sure it isnt grounding when going into reverse.

Hiya Dicko,

If you can shift into Low, First, and Second with no grinding, the problem will not have anything to do with vacuum or idle.

Basically, I'm thinking that you have two likely possibilities in this situation.

One: your contact points in the shift lever are burnt or corroded in the reverse contact spot. This could be due to a slightly out of adjust shift lever plus the action of pressing down (and consequently compacting the points) when shifting into reverse. Disassembling the shift lever and checking the condition of the points would be a good idea.

Two: Your shift coupler may not be transferring the motion of the shift rod to the hockey stick properly. When you shift into Reverse you are actually moving the shift rod backwards. While it would be likely that this would also occur when you attempt to shift into First wear in the shift rod set screw hole might allow for this to happen only in Reverse.

You might want to post up this problem over at VWAR, the AutoStick website.

Thank you everyone. I'll take a look at the contacts and see what happens. Thanks also for giving me the heads up on the VWAR, I'll have a trawl through there.

Cheers

Dicko.
