so this last couple of days ive noticed an interesting noise from the rear of my baja.

it seems to come about when i back off the throttle at slow speeds, its consistant to road speed and not revvs but it wil miss a click every now and then and it doesnt always happen. but seems to happen now more often than not.

its kind of like a cross between a click and a clunk.

with the car in neutral rolling back and forth i cant seem to get it to make the noise, perhaps its connected to a particular spot in the suspension arc? I jacked up the car the day after i first heard it and adjusted the brakes and thought i had fixed it but the noise is still there. spinning the wheel doesnt make a sound.

tomororw im going to have a solid go at finding the culprit and im after ideas to persue.

its a swinger box. recently rebuilt, long axles running type 1 brakes with spacers for the long splines, Clutch is functioning properly and has plenty of play in the pedal.

thanks
Nicko

Check or replace the rear body mounts, under the mudgaurds. Also check the shock bushes haven't worn or are sloppy. I also had the frame horns peel apart at the seam! Hope this helps.

What about handbrake cable adjustment? If you pull on the handbrake does the noise go away, if so probably the cable rubbing on the drum casting ribs, if it's coming from the drum area...

all torsion rubbers and mounts are brand new. ill check the mounting bolts and rubber. the shocks are brand new KYB.

thats a good idea matt i will investigate that.

it also makes a clunking on the drivers side with suspension movement that i havent been able to pin point. its been doing that unchanged for quite a while though. this is a new thing.

A clunk with the suspension is usually torsion bushes or body mount rubbers squashed or loose, or even the shock bushes or bolts also check the top shock to body clearance. Occasionally it can be the axle to side gear clearance, but that is quite a specific noise and internal in the diff. Certainly the drum/axle nut needs to be f'n tight as Greedy said.......and Barry could be onto something with the big stereo idea :-).

drivers side hand brake cable was loose and handbrake was working from the passenger wheel. so i tightened it up and thought it fixed it but went for a drive and its there more than ever.

its so weird that it wont do it when i roll the car. only when im cruising slowly and then take my foot of the throttle and coast. ill be out to try some other stuff in a moment.

thanks for the ideas so far guys

ok im an idiot for not checking the blindingly obvious first.

there was play in the drum. 36mm nut was loose. the thread isnt the best on the old nut so ive ordered a new one from micks which should be here tomorrow morning and then ill put it back together.
