Hi,
I posted a wanted ad for a second hand engine to suit my 70 1500cc Beetle. If I get one that needs reconditioning, does anyone have any recommendations for businesses in the Sydney and surrounding areas (I am in Canberra) that do machining of these engines?

What is involved in the line boring process? I assume that they would need the crank as well as the engine case to do the machining?

I have been told by a local guy that about $1200 covers the machining and I'd have to send the case, crank and conrods as a complete unit away. How does this compare to prices that people have experienced?

A good second hand engine is my preference but I might end up having to go down the reconditioning path.

Thanks heaps,
James

That's BLOODY expensive if its only for machining! Maybe they meant the whole bottom end being built for that price??? You have a PM

Yeah I assume that it is a complete rebuild of the whole bottom end, not just the machining of the case, so there is a fair bit of labour involved.

What sort of costs would you expect for just line boring of a case? I've heard that you really have to get these things line bored when rebuilding as they are likely to vibrate and self destruct fairly quickly.

I got your PM - thanks. I will respond but need 5 posts on the forum (1 more after this one!), before I am allowed to respond.
