" Some of you might appreciate this. Machinist's Workshop magazine tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts.

They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist, Bud Baker.

They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

*Penetrating oil ..... Average load*
None ...................... 516 pounds
WD-40 ................... 238 pounds
PB Blaster ............... 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ......... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil .............. 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix.......53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price. "

That's very interesting.

There are times when the good old WD has failed me, even given lots of soaking.

I still think that the best penetrating and release oil is eucalyptus oil.

It has never failed me.

I saw it used first on the nuts and bolts of a big irrigation pipe on the Murrumbidgee River in NSW. The whole of the nuts and bolts were rusted into an unrecognisable lump of flaking rust. Some of the nuts were half rusted away. Bolts that were half rusted away did not break. Spanners would not fit. We had to use pipe wrenches to undo them.

Eucalyptus oil and an hour of soaking and they all came free.

I was confinced from then on. Eucalyptus oil for me.

i gotta give that ago!

Same about the old wd40. I always put it on hte top pedestal simply cause my father always refered to it as 'the penetrating fluid' out there.
Cause the stuff ain't cheap... and i have always used it with often difficulty...

Goanna oil is one of the best, but hard to get (unless you are a goanna, I guess lol ). It will soak through a glass jar. If you sit a jar of it down, it will leave a ring under the jar in a day or two.

Isn't Acetone simply nail polish remover?

So, raid yer dad's tool shelf and yer mum's ensuite and voila!

WD40 is nothing like it used to be - Inox seems ok

ATF Acetone wold not be able to be used on roads in California it would also cause cancer in California.
