Looking at doing a cheapie 12V conversion for my '67 1300 Beetle. Does anyone have a suitable working 12V genny or alternator lying around doing nothing. Preferably in Brisbane if possible.
Cheers, Angus
If You change to an alternator
You will need an alternator stand to mount it on
as they are different plus You would need to change the fuel pump to an alternator one too...
as the generator pump is too far over to fit an alternator..
no such thing as a cheap conversion..🙅🙅🙅
cheers

Maybe he already had an alternator fuel pump.
The difference is just physical - an alternator one is sort of tilted over a bit to give extra clearance near the alt/gen is all.

I have seen the Alternator ground away so the original type pump will still fit... lol

My alt conversion went on with the gen fuel pump, but it rubbed, which is good for neither item (I changed it to an alt one asap. Make sure you get the right pushrod for it!!!!!), so do it right is my advice! 🙂
I'd forgotten about the different fuel pumps, haven't done one for a while. I guess that makes it better to stick with a genny to minimise other changes (and costs). The fuel pump is the original style, probably THE original pump by everything else on the car.
Does a 12V gennie fit straight on to the 6V stand?
This little fella will drop straight in.

As always, call Vintage on (02) whatever as they may have one
😂
Edit: Forgot to add that I found my 12V genny, and it has brackets on it and so won't fit your engine.

Angus, a 12v gennie won't fit on a 6V stand. To convert it to 12v you need to find a small body 12v 25A generator from a Porsche 912. They are like rocking horse poo in Oz, and about $250-$450 on the samba.
Your probably better getting a 12v gennie stand and a 12v genny. You will probably need the fan and the fan tin as they will be different also.

6v starter will be fine, i always use them, never had 1 play up yet, get an alternator angus as regulators play up often, they are cheap new at classic vee dub but you still need the rest of the gear, be careful to get the correct backing plate as well!

I'm wanting to keep cheap as, I've just had a massive repair bill on my wifes Vectra, which blew one of the head gaskets on the way back from a camping trip.
Damo, is that just the generator itself, what about regulator/stand/backing plate?
I wasn't going to change the starter, just leave it until I pull the motor out next and swap the flywheel and starter then. Haven't had any drama with gennies/regulators over many years of dubbing, think I've replaced one regulator ever - perhaps I've been lucky! Also I've heard a few stories that the quality of the alternator kits currently available are not great - does anyone have any experience to say one way or the other?
I think i got a backing plate there, plus a stand too and a regulator.
