If you had an origional type 3 shiter then it would be bent and have a pin to lock it in to position
you dont need to fix any thing as its not broken you could re grease it and adjust the shifter into correct position
As it's 25 years since I owned a 72 SB (the second one), I can't remember that finer detail but I would think that the stick would have to be dead straight for this to be so. Is that correct?? I don't seem to remember being able to rotate the stick when waiting patiently at the many Sydney traffic lights back then.
😂
One thing for sure is that the earlier chromed bent stick shifter with the rimmed ball housing for the large boot measures 35mm from under the ball to the centre of the pin. The later, and I'm not sure on how late with the rimless houing and small rubber boot and still with a bent black stick measures 43mm from under ball to centre of pin. That's 8mm difference so if you put an early chromed stick in a later housing the ball/pin is only just sitting in the shift rod socket and can come out of mesh. Make sure the two are the correct match.
