Could someone tell me whats involved in fitting a type 1 or 3 gearbox into a 1970 kombi with 1835 engine(mild)? The van will only be used for cruising and I think its revving way too hard on the highway to be comfortable. I notice quite a few kombis are using these boxes especially when they run larger engines and aren't carrying a ton in hilly terrain all day. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks. Greg.

Hi Greg,
very uncommon to put the bug trans into a bay- bus.
...although brazilian buses had a "rhino" version of the bug box with very similar gearing to the 1600 bus.

It is a common conversion on split screen buses however.

I think in a heavy 'bay', the extra weight will make it labour, and put more strain on your engine,(using the beetle box).

If you can make all the mountings, it may be an option for your bus,
but perhaps just a 2lt bus box would drop the revs a little for your cruising.

Or have the 1600 box rebuilt and use a 4.86 ratio diff from the 1800 bus.
