Cheers

All Supers had IRS rear ends with Constant velocity joints..

here is a pic of the IRS rear end and cv joints...
You will have four usually black rubber boots on the axles..

the 1968 Automatic beetles were the first beetles to have the IRS... ignore the hoses etc..

ALL beetles in the USA had IRS from 1969>
but never ever had disc brakes....

Thanks Lee, great pics.

I have drum brakes all round. I shall have a look at axle. I was told that if you can see the axle spin it is IRS and if its encased its a swing axle?

Darren, just to clear up alittle confusion yours isnt actually a superbug, its the base model 1300 so its got 4 wheel drums and swing axle rear

74 superbugs had the curved windscreen, disc brake strut frontend etc

Ohhhh, thanks Joel. I only thought Super as I bought it advertised as that, all good.

So it has a 1300 in it? How can I confirm that, is it stamped or numbered or something? Sorry for all the questions but im still learning all about my bug.

Yes that's correct

one boot each side means its a swing axle..

what is your engine number? At the base of the generator pedestal. From that we can tell what it started out as originally. The original engine would have been 1300 but it would have been replaced/rebuilt at some point in the last 36 years.

if you go around a corner and dont end up on your roof then you have IRS 😂

chances are you have a 1600 engine
its pretty standard practice to replace 1300 heads and cylinders with 1600 ones when they come up for a rebuild
they bolt straigght in and are cheaper plus most ppl like the extra capacity

pretty much.... if you have to fight the steering wheel to turn a corner, you have a beam front.

I agree - WHAT A LOAD! It is obvious that some people have no idea what they are talking about.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Hi darcruze

Are you sure that your engine number is AD 481753 and not AD 0 481753?

If you have the first 0, you have a late 1971 or early 1972, 44HP 1600 engine.

If you don't have the first 0, I don't know what you have.

If the intake manifold of your engine splits into two at the carburetor and then again into two at the heads, you have a twin port, or TP engine. If the intake manifold enters the heads as a single pipe, then you have a single port, or SP engine.

Which is the most desirable? That's a very moot point. Some people say that the TP is weaker at the inlet, because there is not enough metal there and it can/will crack. Others will say that the SP is better because it's stronger where the inlet manifold enters the head and it won't crack there.

The TP is the more powerful than the SP, because the inlet system is more efficient. Don't fuss. The difference is not great.

AD481757 is just a 72 superbug engine so 1600 twin port

not unusual after 30+ years for vws to not have original engines anymore
