This is the redesigned Mk2 VW Touareg SUV, just unveilled in Europe.

The new Touareg will have either a V6 TDI or a new supercharged V6 TSI petrol hybrid drive. VW is downsizing and becoming more efficient - the big V8 and W12 petrol, and V10 TDI engine, are no longer available. The new version is 200 kg lighter than before.

The base version ("4Motion") will have all-wheel drive with Torsen limited-slip differential (4MOTION; climbing ability: 31 degrees). Like the Tiguan, the VW Touareg also has an "Off-road driving programme", which - at the press of a button - tunes the ABS, EDS and ASR for off-road duty, activates Hill Descent Assist and adjusts the automatic gearshift points.

Instead of a Torsen differential, the V6 TDI can be ordered with an optional "Terrain Tech Packet" that has an even more rugged transfer case designed for off-road duty. It includes reduction gearing and centre and rear differentials, each with up to 100 percent locking (4XMOTION; climbing ability: 45 degrees). Similar to the first generation Volkswagen Touareg, this version also has a rotary switch the driver now uses to adapt the car to specific duty conditions over five levels: 1. "On-Road"; 2. "Off-Road" (like "Off-road driving programme" plus automatic control of the mechanical locks); 3. Low (like "Off-road" plus activation of reduced gearing, higher shift points, no automatic upshift in manual mode); 4. Addition of centre differential lock; 5. Addition of rear differential lock. Equipped like this, the Volkswagen Touareg can conquer any terrain on Earth.

Over 500,000 VW Touaregs have been sold around the world. The new version will be available in German dealerships in late April, and Australia later.

Yes there's a family resemblance. However the new Touareg has the current Walter de Silva VW 'face', as used on the Mk6 Golf, Scirocco, the upgraded T5 Transporter and new Polo. The Tiguan still has the previous shield-style grille like the existing Polo, Jetta and Eos.

But that aside, the Tiguan is much smaller - it's based on a stretched Golf platform. The Touareg is considerably bigger, and its platform its also used on the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne.

Did you know that the VW Touareg has been sold with more different-cylinder engines, than any other car in automotive history? Since it first appeared in 2002, it has been available with a 5 (TDI), 6 (V6 petrol and diesel), 8 (V8 petrol), 10 (TDI) and 12 (W12 petrol), and now a hybrid drive as well.

Anyway this is the little Tiguan - compare with new Touareg above.

I don't want to sound too cynical, but there isn't much point having all that off-road gear in the vehicle with a clearance of (what looks like) 200mm.

It's a nice looking VW and it certainly has some good looking specs, but an off-roader it 'aint.

Have to agree with the comment above. Looks lower than the old one! Unless it's just for the photo's? Looks very nice though....reckon I'd still have it if someone gave me one. With all those offroad gadgets, I reckon I could get it where most 4by's STOP.

Yes that's only one model. There's a number of different versions in Europe - the Comfortline and Trendline versions are 'sporty' SUVs as shown in the photo. There's a wide range of options, such as different wheels up to the 20" 'Pikes Peak', to choose from.

If you want the full-on 'off-road' version, get the Sportline version, but I dunno if that will be coming to Australia.

You can download the PDF brochure - if you speak German! at the German VW website (scroll to the bottom🙂
