I have just installed my front wheel bearing on a type 1 ball joint/disk front end and I am not sure if I have adjusted them properly.

I have seated the bearings on the spindle shaft and backed off the adjusting nut so i can just move the thrust washed underneath the nut, just like it says in all the books. I have installed the wheels and I can move the the wheel slightly when I try to rock it side to side. Is this normal or should I have no play in the wheel bearing in this direction?

If this movement is OK how much should this side ways movement be in mm at the edge of the tyre?

Some help in the right direction would be appreciated.

side way is not the best the idea is to tighen up untill there is a slight drag, my advice is to go for a short drive than jack it up and see if it tight or loose
i do my own with a very slight side way movement it is one of those jobs that are very hard to explain
good luck

The thrust washer should just move under the nut when using a large sturdy flat head screwdriver. There should be no discernable sideways movement in the wheel after adjusting the bearings.
Keep spinning the wheel to make sure the bearing isn't dragging 😉 If it does then back the nut off.
madness is in the eye of the beholder 👍

you have adjusted the bearings correctly

however when testing for movement you will have 2 types of tests

with your hands at the 3 and 9 oclock postions you are moving the wheel to check for movement in the tie rod ends

with your hands at the 12 and 6 oclock positions you are testing for wheel bearing movement

sounds like u were testing at the 3 and 9 position and not the bearings
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true
