Hi all, I'm hoping for some quick words of wisdom please. I need to remove a gearbox mount from a '60 bug - as in, the steel mount welded to the body where the front of the box bolts in. I need to remove it intact, as well as leaving the body intact, as the mount has to be re-welded into the correct position (long story).

I need to do this today or my project is down the tubes.

I can't get a grinder in there due to the location. I have tried drill attachments, hand files, hacksaw blades, all of which are really not having a great deal of effect.

I was recommended to buy a nibbler which looks like it is the wrong tool for this job.

Does someone please have a tried method of removing the mount - intact - so that I can keep this project on track (rego next week)? I am open to perhaps buying a specialised tool if I am able to get it in the next few hours (eg Bunnings later today).

Everyone's assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Air hacksaw....difficult
Angle grinder with 1/2 worn cut off wheel.....if trans is out
Oxy torch.....best
Die grinder with small square edged steel cuttig burr.....painful

Even if you cut a little extra, it can be dressed, repaired (metal added) then refitted correctly.

I think you will have to cut mount off .
leaving weld on there so not to damage frame.🥲
them get new mount, start again.

car forums. where a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never ever to see the road again. 🥲

Thanks all for your help, at least I know there wasn'tan easy solution.

I can't take photo's due to IT issues, sorry. Just to clarify, yes I had to remove the mount (steel bracket) from the chassis of the car, so that it can be re-welded back onto the chassis in the correct place.

In the end I had to destroy it (grinder), I have sourced another mount and we'll weld it on. I would have rathered use the one I had but it wouldn't work for me.

A recommendation - if anyone else considers doing this job - avoid where possible!

Thanks again for your help.

i removed the steel bracket complete with the old rubber mount with the gearbox and engine in the car with a die grinder with a small diameter burr, i then cut the remaining weld with a sharp chisel, this left the bracket in good condition and all i had to do was dress the part were it was welded, i bolted the new rubber mount and steel bracket back onto place and checked the alignment then welded on both sides of the steel bracket
