I'm looking for a lock up garage in bondi to store and work on the VW. If anyone has any leads it would be much appreciated!! (or even a unit with a LUG, up to 600p/w)
Thanks
Hi, probably not much help to you, but the most famous auto workshop is the Bondi Garage on Curlewis St. It's the former home base of 'Gelignite' Jack Murray (1907-1983), the famous Round Australia trials driver and adventurer. He won the 1954 Redex Trial in his 1948 Ford V8, 'the Grey Ghost'. He owned the Bondi Garage and it was his automotive base for many years. He stored his collection there - it survived a fire in the late 1970s and was rebuilt.
Not sure of the ownership details after Jack died in 1983, but his garage still exists, and still looks just as it did in the 1950s. It would be a good place to ask - but then Jack never drove VWs in the Trials.
Been past there a few times, I think its still operating as a workshop. Nice to know theres a bit of history round the corner anyway!
you're gonna struggle in Bondi I reckon, garages are goldmines down Bondi, most is on street parking so LUG are worth a lot of money - i know people who rent them out for $200 p/w anf have people waiting to be next - look more towards Bondi Rd / Junction area / or Rose Bay or even up Bellevue Hill [ not the posh part ] but along Plumer Road area nr. the golf course... some of the new apartment blocks have underground parking with the odd space going spare - still gonna cost you tho.... if you find any secure space for less than $80 week you're doing well.
if you're really struggling - i may know of a place where i live down watsons bay - still will be around $60-$70 a week...

I used to live across the road from the Bondi Garage, it is now run by Jeff, he is the nephew of GJ and you can find the Grey Ghost inside still. Jeff and the mechs there are a bunch of great guys who used to let me borrow tools and stuff to keep my VW's going. the only cost is to get them to help demolish a case of suds on friday afternoons.
I sub let a parking spot from a neighbouring tenant who had a space but no motor, so i suppose you could do some door knocking
Keeping it real !
