Hi Guys

If one wanted a new case, where would they go and how much would you expect to pay.

Secondly, are they ready to go when you buy them or do I have to spend heaps on machining to get them square.

A VW Magnesium case ($900) is pretty well good to go out of the box, unless your going bigger bore, then machining the case windows is necessary ($200). If a bigger crank, clearancing inside is necessary, how much depends on size and combo.
An aftermarket case (non VW) ($1200 or more) on the otherhand can be ordered with the machining all done BUT there can be lots of little things to check and correct, they are about twice the weight but can handle the higher performance better, if put together well. They are thick in construction which tends to make them run about 10* hotter too.

Heaps more to consider.....

Most new mag cases have a bogus oil pick up tube.
They are on a very steep angle, left to right,(oil light comes on in rh? corners unless overfull),
so you will have to extend the tube or re-attach the bell and swivel it around.
I usually just replace the tube with an old german one, but have recently used up my stock.

Other than that, for stock rebuilds,(and HP),
you need to watch the case savers holding up your barrels,
and run a tap into them,
or else your head studs will seem too long and may hit your inlet manifold, and/or the rockers.

I prefer the mag cases,
but for the cost of all the machining required for a big bore or stroker,
you cant go past the value of the alum cases that are all done.
