tHEY ARE CALLED SWAMP COOLERS...
I believe water is added to them and the air flows over the water to be cooled...
maybe they fill up with mossies , so they are called swamp coolers ????
I really cannot see how they would be legal these days...
they must make RHD and LHD ones...??
so, to balance You beetle You would need one either side..
😂😂😂😂

they are very rare, I cannot ever remember seeing one in Australia until the past few years at VW shows... LEE

Found a description "You can't be olde skool without an original thermador car cooler. Basically its air-conditioning that uses no energy. Inside the big gray tube is a blanket with a string attached that hangs in the passenger window. You fill the tube up with water before you start driving, then every so often you pull the cord. It rotates the blanket inside and dips it in the water. Then air comes through the tube, it becomes cool by going through the wet blanket and finally goes into your car. Obviously it doesn't work in high humidity or when you're at a stoplight."

To me swamp coolers are really an American thing that people have suddenly latched onto as a huge custom trend. I don't know why, but what was a completely obscure and undesirable piece of old junk a few years ago is now the hottest vintage accessory you can find.
95% of them are for lhd vehicles so when fitted to RHD Beetles they blown moist air in the drivers ear.😵
Customer service is not dead in Australia.
Always after HAZET & MATRA & VW factory tools
lol so they are like an evaporative air conditioning?
looks stupid imho

Not many RHD ones about... There was a RHD one a Day of the VW here in WA last year.
For there age awesome bit of kit I reckon.
haha, be like a wet willy in the ear.
I rekon they are groovy. Its all about the novalty. The fact you would trip everyone out with what looks like a bazooka strapped to the side of your car...
Its death race all over again...

I've had one for nearly 10 years and it lives on my car thoughout the summer months.....
Very effective cooling and yes I have been pulled over by the police numerous times only to find that they were just intested in what it is. It only obscures your window a little you can still easily see out underneath it.
They do come up for sale on Aus ebay from time to time, your best bet is US e-bay though, expect to pay $500 plus.
they are awesome. i want 3!
