yea, on public roads they are. if on private property you are fine. (ie: private car park, track, show ground)
they class it as a 'distraction' to other road users. It doesn't stop all of them though, but if a cop sees ya, its a bit hard for them not to notice the underlights.

It's a distraction because it makes everyone else on the road piss them selves laughing at them as they go by

i had one long one in my car, behind the back seat which flashed with the music and shit, was so the most heccas thing that been in my ride. But yeah i got 5% window tint so couldnt see it from the outside, and its gone now cause when i got a good amp my subs caused it to flex and busted the fluro tube in it.
71-BEETLE-SEDAN wrote:But yeah i got 5% window tint so couldnt see it from the outside,
lucky they couldn't. back in the autobarn days i had a few customers that got the sting for flashing interiors while driving. simply for the same reason, ie: distraction.
mind you, you have ur civil rights to refuse a cop to inspect the insides of your car without your permission, unless they have evidence to suggest drugs/weapons etc.
Half the time, i doubt they would notice it in the interior, unless its a full disco strobe going like a skank on crack.

As far as I know... BLUE is a NO No...
Blue used to be POLICE only..
but now other vehicles have them..
but NOT private vehicles..
the white LED colour ...
as used on most trucks and semi trailers as number plate lamps
are Legal... [they look light blue]
that was the whitest white in LEDs at the time...
I just bought some LEDs...
and they are white... same as a normal bulb... [I hate 'em]
I like the bluish types of LED colour...
silmilar to the projector headlamps colour...
but Police in NSW are having another blitz shortly on illegal headlamps..
My Son thinks that they are on the lookout for projector type headlamps that are added as an accessory..??
I was stopped last year during a similar blittz..
one police officer reckoned My head lamps were illegal...
the globes are actually Gold colored..
but the Highway Patrol Officer just looked and said they are normal headlamps..
so, maybe they ARE looking for lights that disn't come on the car originally..
many of the projector type are self levelling..
or can be adjusted from inside the car...
as they are VERY bright when not dipped enough..

I don't know about underbody lighting...
there used to be a few around locally...
but I never see them about now...
so, just like everything else... its illegal...
I was thinking of having RED LEDs in My engine bay that will light up with the brake lamps...
and will be seen thru the vents in the engine lid... !!
what about the new HSV holdens??
they have about 10 VERY BRIGHT LEDs below the headlamps
VERY BRIGHT... I'd hate to see a line of these cars coming at Me... lol
they are VERY bright in the daytime.... ??

A little off topic, but man, have they invented new ways to screw up the looks of a car or what !?!?!
As much as I like my HSV's, the latest ones with those LED's just look sh!t.

I believe the HSV lights are designated as "Daytime running lights" not intended as nighttime headlights. I havent seen any in the flesh, but that is my understanding. The rules for ADR lighting are pretty simple. White lights can ONLY face forward. Red lights can ONLY face rearward. Amber as side or width markers (flashing or constant depending on the configuration of the vehicle) Blue lights are only for emergency services. And white light can only be shown at the rear when the vehicle is engaged in a reverse gear.
And yes ..... underbody neons would look kinda sh*te on a Dub ... 😀 leave it to the boy racers ....
cheers
Chippy 😀
Ive been told you can have under car neons as long as you cant see the neon light it self ?..
I think there only for the ricers but each to there own

So this look isn't so cool huh? They make great courtesy lights though.
From your ole' mate Jeff
HSV lights..
I believe these are only daytime running lamps...
which it was rumoured to be coming on Aussie vehicles years ago...
but they are very bright..
as LEDs only shine mainly forwards...
All that light is concentrated forwards...
and LEDs are NOW VERY bright...
only good thing is they don't use much power...
LEE
PS: You cannot help notice them....

So is it ok to have it but not turned it on?

That is as the RTA rules book states. You will find some of those blue headlight globes are not packaged with an ADR compliance number
Lighting
Adding extra lights or neon’s can bring more attention to your car, but it’s not always wanted. The fitting of under body lights (neon’s or LEDs) or other lights is legal, provided they meet several criteria. For under body lights, they cannot be distracting to other driver’s, this means you cannot see the source of the light. Flashing lights (excluding indicators) are illegal except for emergency vehicles or special vehicles in hazardous situations (usually amber lights on construction vehicles or tow trucks etc).
Colours are also limited. Blue lights cannot be fitted to any vehicle at any time, unless it an emergency vehicle – this includes under body lights, LED washers or parkers. White lights can only be visible from the front of the vehicle; red lights can only be visible from the rear of the vehicle. Purple cannot be used due to their use by the Department of Transport. Yellow (or amber) should only be used as clearance markers.

Jason,
The light under the deck lid is held in with 2 pipe clip type things. The are bolted under the nuts for the number plate light housing. I have a separate wire to a switch under the dash - I have the LEDs under the running boards on the same switch - it is easier to turn them on and off at will that way.
I can get a closer picture in the daylight on the weekend and post it for you if you wish.

Oh ok,cool same bolts as the number plate, thats a good idea.Yeah i wish to set up a light
that i can turn on(from the lid) at night time if i ever need to check the engine bay.IF you could
upload some pics that would be great.
Thanks Mate.🙂

Good One Jeff..
always was going to put a light in the engine compartment..
never got around to the Beetle...
Had them in all other cars over the years..
I have an LED light on a head band...
would be very good to work on Your car...
I keep forgetting to put it in My beetle.. lol
so..
is having a RED LED stop light inside the engine compartment
OK??
I suppose a RED stop lamp is OK so long as its at the rear of the vehicle...

here's a thought...
rig up an array of white LEDs
point it to the pulley drive belt
and have it so it flash every times the coil sparks
well it would flash on the opposite side but it should be good enough
hooray a leave in timing light
of course... have a switch somewhere
in case you had to do a roadside fix lol

OK You do it first... lol
Does sound great though....
LEE
PS. having it fire at all 4 cylinders is going to be Very Difficult
to look at.... just about on all the time... lol
maybe a small coil wrapped around number 1 spark plug lead?
would be excellent... would need experimentation though...
and maybe lots of LEDs... lol
I have 20 x [12v] 5mm clear LEDs right next to My left hand here.. [resistors in the leads]
