Hey guys.

Still looking into my new VW project and got a question.

Iv been swayed away from a few cars due to color.. Most the cars i have looked at dont have perfect paint and would need some work and repainting to bring it back up to the standard i want ( perfect ).

Just wondering how much you guys think it would cost to have a total change of color ? I know you need to remove all internal compotents engine etc.. which i would be willing to do myself as im changing the engine anyways.. I would be after a very good quality single color in some kind of pastle color... no metalic stuff.

Pros and Cons on this ??

Cheers Vice.

have you gota spare 10K in yr pocket for that PERFECT paint job u wont get much change

whats underneath the existing stuff are you stripping all the panels back to bare metal
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

An easy way I like to explain it to people who want a repaint is, break down what you are prepared to spend.

Example, you may want to spend $3K.

Materials can cost between $500 and $2000 depending on quality of materials (and number of rounds of primer/block sanding etc).

Lets say you want to go with the cheapest paint/materials/consumables available (approx $500). You have $2500 left for labour. The cheapest shop rate you could find would be around $50/hr (this of course doesn't including people doing it out of their backyard in which case no overheads = cheaper rate). So your remaining $2500 will get you 50 hours of work.

For anyone that has done any form of paint prep will realise how long the process takes for a reasonable job. 50 hours would be barely cover any rust repair, maybe windows out, limited strip down, and limited panel work.

If you go into the process with the above in mind, you can't be disappointed with the panel beater/painter for the job you get if you don't want to pay the labour it takes for a good job. If you are happy with a quick respray for limited cost then happy days! All comes down to what you want, and what you want to spend.

Best of luck with your quest mate, hope it works out.

tching , Fading ? not sure what you mean there..

if u chose a made up colour vs a Standard of the shelf colour you will always have trouble matching the paint it never is the same

Fading is when the pigments are sucked out of the colour due to the UV light and hot temps we get in summer
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

Remember this if you go cheap you get cheap if you want like you said (perfect) finish
you wont get a perfect job for round $3000. A good job done with in a year and not 5 years of bullshit excuses and bog over rust will be $10k+.
Yes it sounds like alot but think of it as an investment a good vw done right will go for over 20 grand.

Hey guys.. Cheers for the replys..

I was planning on doing all the stripping my self and pretty much just dropping off a shell and putting the car back together myself.. Would 3k still be on the cheaper side ??

Im not set on this just finding it hard to find the right car for the right price and color atm..

I would prefer to buy one with a color that im happy with and just have it resprayed the same color but its pretty tuff atm.. not many type 3s out there.

The way i would love to do it would be to find someone who is knowledgeable in repair and restoration and getting the car ready for paint to work with and teach me..

I want to learn but have no one to teach me my dads into golf not cars... and not the VW type..

Anyone out there want to help me id be happy to pay them..

if you learn how to do it all/most your self. It also helps if you know friends in the industry.

Best to know people who do it for the love of doing not just as a job for money. I have mate who worked at mustang country in Vic, kyneton.
his job was body prep and spray painting. hes a little younger than me only 21,22? but dam he is good and knows his $hit. best painter in town I recon, well have to be restoring old classic muscle cars.
