Was wondering what sealant if any people use to assemble VW motors.
I assume nothing on pushrod seals, but what do you use elsewhere?
Especially base of barrels, oil pump, inlet/exhaust manifolds etc?

Want to give it the best chance of not leaking!

Also what do people do with cracked heads? Repair or et new?
I have spare heads to get this motor back on the road, but are the old ones worth keeping?

Thanks for the help!

nothing on the barrels, slight coating of permatex on the oil pump and gaskets..

and Silastic on the Inlet Exhaust gaskets...

Yes, the standard Black silastic will stand up to exhaust pipe heat... [muffler mechanic told Me] works great...

Pushrod seals... I coat both sides of the pushrod seals with permatex gasket cement..
as most will crack , and without the Permatex they will leak..

if the seals were good quality, then probably no sealant would be needed... but all mine have cracked... and engine hasn't done 10,000kms..
I've replaced them twice.. last time with Silicone seals..

I've since bought some black ones from somewhere??
they do look good...

cheers

Nothing on the barrels? WTF Come on Lee, you NEED sealer on the base of the barrels, this area gets hosed with oil being flung off the bigends, major area for leak without sealant.

I use Curil K2 on carefully prepped case 1/2's
RTV silicone on the barrels and lower four headstud washers
mastergasket (locktite 515) on oilpump and general gaskets, including inlet manifold usually without any gasket
dry exhaust, just good quality gaskets and exhaust system.

I go along with this as it was good enough for VW to use in initial asembly.
