Trip to newcastle yesterday. car was brilliant all the way up but engine blewup on way home.
Looks like 2nd engine needs to be fitted before plannedand holiday jobs need to be reshuffled!
Crap!

bugger
What happened??
Futue te ipsum!!!
Not sure but NRMA road service guy (ex VW mechanic) said it overheated. One of the blanks on the tinware had fallen off. Just got really noisy and lots of smoke. No warning!

I'm guessing he means the "plugs" that you can put in the fanshroud to block up the two air exits that are left when you don't run heater boxes.... otherwise yeah, what's a blank on the tinware ???

that sucks to hear
If it makes you feel better or maybe worse I dunno it would have taken more than just a heater hose plug falling out to cook an engine
testing has acutally found blocking them off disturbs the internal air flow, they dont overheat but it leads to one side running cooler than the other
theres a few vws getting around with no plugs or no breast plate tin etc because of ignorant owners
they run very hot but dont normally cook especially not a baja with no body work covering up the engine

Yeah I thought the same. I was just listening to the expert! Don't know if I feel any better though.
Certainly changes my plans in what work I was going to do next!
🥲
Apparantly I am missing tinware from under the cylinders. Has been missing since I bought it and probably longer but never had overheating problems before. I don't know what has caused it, but gives me an excuse to pull it down and find out what I have inside.
I have a spare set of 93-96 pistons, cylinders and crank that I was thinking of using but not sure what capacity they work out to. At least I have the expensive gear to rebuild it.

This sounded very similar to what happen to my notch driving it back from nsw. except the noise I was getting sounded very like the bottom end or severe piston slap. I just checked before and saw there was no thermostat or air flaps that go with them.
So overheating in my dub probably wasn't the cause of its downfall.

Missing a bit of tinware won't cause a Baja to overheat!
When I first bought mine all it had was the top cylinder covers and the fanhousing, nothing else. It'd happily run all day at 110km/h and I've never ever seen to oil temp go over 90°
And it also never had blanks in the fanhousing horns.
I have since added most of the missing tins and plugged the horns. But unless you have absolute bulk crud blocking up the fins or cooler it's very hard to get a Baja to overheat. There's just too much airflow.
One other thing, my dad bought a Baja that was the pinnacle of dodgery. We bought it off eBay from Brisbane and flew down to drive it back. Once we got it back and checked it out properly I discovered that the stock cooler in the fanhousing had been removed and an adapter fitted to run an external oil filter. So there was nothing cooling the oil but the air flowing over the sump! And we drove it nine hours straight on the highway to get home. Never blew up 😂

If you said I was a Volkswagen man, you'd be right.
Yeah, I have been up and down freeway several times including hot summer days with no problems. The worst I think it could have done is some uneven heating and cooling.
I think it will be something else and hope to find out when I pull it down. Just have to get the 2nd motor in first and get it drivable again. Hope fully this week.

your oil temp would have been fine cos air flow to it was still as normal but it would have probably scared you to know what head temps were like.
the deflectors on the bottom of the barrels is often left out but its a very critical part, as it ensures the bottom of the barrels get an even airflow all the way around instead of only cooling the tops

So Joel are you saying that it could be overheating problems due to the heads being too hot. It was rather cool at 10pm on Saturday night.

I gotta feeling that it overheated because a hose or the oil cooler has had a blow out. When draining the oil there was only about 1/2 a litre of oil that came out. Could mean more issue for me, but was thinking of putting on an external oil coller any way.

uh oh! say by by to your bearing, crank and possibly con-rod. oh and don't for get you cam bearings and maybe lifters 😂 sorry I know it could be bad 🥲
Basically is sounds like you were on the verge of seizure.

Yep! I guess I stopped just in time. At leats I have new set of pistons, cylinders and crank for it just gotta get bearings etc and lots of time.

your rods might be weakened by the extreme heat from friction. I wouldn't use them again. Same as the crank I am afraid.

Spare motor I am using has a lot of the stuff I need but how do I tell whether it is a 12V alternator or 6V generator by just looking at it?

lol I misread what you said. 6v generators look a lot smaller.
this is a 6V. note how small it is compared to the pulley and regulator.

Thanks Vlad01. I worked out I had a 12 volt generator. Decided I would just change spare motor to my alternator anyway.
Currently stipping both motors and working out what needs to go on spare motor and what I can get away with to get it going. Been a good exercise as I am learning what is missing on my curent (read that as Blown up motor) and what needs fixing.
Spare motor needs heads removed due to crap on top of pistons, bit more work than I hoped for.
Can I tell type of motor from the tin ware shape as it is very different from current motor?

so do u block the holes in the fan shoud or link them together
Seems to be mixed opinions on this. With a baja like mine I do get a lot of fresh air over the motor and it has run quite alright even with the heater horns not blocked off. I know I would definitely block them off if I had normal engine cover.

The correct thing to do according to Jakes testing is cause the same back pressure that heater boxes create, which apperently takes plugs with a 1.5" hole in the center.
That said I've always just run 1 7/8" welsh plugs or a Scat 36hp doghouse shroud and never had an engine run hot
Ive just got mine through pipe out under the breastplate tin, not into heater boxes.
Well began pulling out motor and pulling it apart. Looks like there was an oil leak. Oil is all through the doghouse and looks like it may have come from the oil cooler and the rear seal.
Also I remember seeing a discussion on piston sizes and was wondering if anyone can remember what the topic was about.
Motor to be put into the car had hell of a lot of crap inside inlet manifolds due to poor stoarge, which meant a pull down of the heads for cleaning. It has a pict34 solex carby and approx 85mm bore. What capacity would this be? I am assuming either 1500 or 1600.
