Many years ago when I was into my custom cars back in the UK (around the end of the 70's there was a Fiat 500 doing the rounds with a hotted up 1600 VW sticking out of the back. I believe it was pretty rapid if not scary! Plus a company called Autocavan put a VW engine into a Haflinger.

Yes,

I believe the VW engine bolted into the Haflinger easily...

You still see the odd original Haflingers about...

I wouldn't mind having one of those...

when I was working, there were some Haflinger parts still there... a clutch thrust bearing comes to memeory...

From what I recall Lee it wasn't so simple I don't know why though? The engine although two cylinder does look a lot like a VW and things like the dynamo doubling as the starter were quite novel. I remember looking at one for sale that my elder brother was looking at in absolutely immaculate condition together with a photo album of the rebuild.$7000 and about 10 years ago!

OK I'll take that back.. not easily..

and yes the dynamo was the starter also....

Maybe they used a VW gearbox/transaxle too...??
then axles??? sounds too hard..

Hi people
I own an Halflinger with a VW lump in the back. I believe it was built in the 80’s and used for competition in the UK. As you say the “Dynosaart” sits in the centre and my mans solution was to run a duplex chain down to the crankshaft using a bearing/cam type tensioner similar to a golf’s. The inlet manifold had to be “adjusted” so that an SU carb, ex 850 mini sits to the left with a long manifold under the “Dynostart” to the right. Filling the engine with oil presents an opportunity as there is no room for the filler, only a 8mm pipe stub brazed onto a plate covering the petrol pump “hole” doubles as a breather as well. Its my intension to rebuild the beast over the winter, www.neil-ellis.co.uk

My brother is still looking for a Haflinger, the problem is is that there's not that many around.
