I ripped off a rear mudflap day before Valla...
decided to take the other one off but never got around to it..
ripped the other one off [brackets and all] while reversing out of where I was staying in Nambucca Heads..

Filled up with 95 again at a Wooles Servo in Armidale...

Lee, it sounds to me you got off light, I should find out Friday how much damage there is to my engine.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!
Hi

We almost went off the road... i wasn't driving... kinda wish i was... lol. other then that and besides the same old 6 cd's we'd been listening to the whole 5 days it was relatively uninteresting.

Who was driving the yellow bug that raced at Raeliegh? It was driving around the campsites at Valla leaving an oil slick everywhere it went..... I'm very suprised it didnt blow the motor up from oil loss..... It looked like someone was sitting on the rear bumper pouring out oil with an open bottle of oil as the car was being driven it lost that much.....

yeah i spoke to the owner of the yellow one in question.
it was a line come loose in transit then a braised line failed then finally the flywheel bolts sheared.

Hope the damage isn't too severe Donn! My 71 1300 ran like a dream thank goodness, save for a very annoying rattle which developed in the offside door 😢
Travelled from Wagga Wagga (rural NSW) through to Valla and back, and despite the shocking winds on the homeward trip, no complaints from the wife either!!
Come to think of it, didn't even see any guys with problems either on the way up or back, testament to the brilliant design I guess 😀 (design of the car that is ... not the wife...)

No problems with the old "S" Lee. Ran sweet for the whle 1100 km. If I could have arranged it I was thinking of coming up the New England and travelling to Valla with you. Maybe 2012?? As for petrol, I make sure it's the standard unleaded 91 stuff. Haven't had any problems with the 8.5: 1 compression and 10 deg BTDC timing. The engine is otherwise stock 1600 single port standard everything else.
Maybe I'll give the Blue Dolphin a big miss next time!

I went home to Port Macquarie from Newcastle after work on Friday and had to wash the car again due to the wet roads, then it rained going from Port Macquarie to Valla on Saturday morning, so it got dirty again (bugger). No worries travelling from Valla back to Port Macquarie, then Port Macquarie back to Newcastle on Sunday night though.
One of the blokes from Port Macquarie with a white Type 3 Notch apparently had trouble up there and ended up trailering it home, but then again, when I looked in his engine bay in the main street, he had no tinware on the engine??? Go figure. He reckoned the problem wasn't overheating, but I do find that hard to believe.
From your ole' mate Jeff
We had a good run to and from Valla in the BAJA and Micheals fastie ran like a dream. 😁

We had a great VW weekend away.We went down to the Valla PUB/ TAVEN on Friday night and Rose won the meat raffle and won 77 SCHOONERS so she became very popular
Sorry to one of the boys from WPVW who had one FREE schooner to many.
Both of our little vw didnt miss a beat on the 900Ks trip
But before we left Valla on Monday morning our neighbor in our complex called to tell us that some one had broken into our work shop, Luckily they only took the cash tin with about $80 worth of coins in it and lucky they did take any tools of do any damage to the shop or cars in workshop.
the subaru bug went great on the way up I used 7.4 litres per 100Ks then running around the weekend to street parade and site seeing 8.2ltr per 100Ks
60 Ks up hills poor Lee
hahaha I was doing a bit more then the 110 speed limit
and noboby past me up a hill
to get 7.4
don't think the fuel economy was as good on the way home on Monday as shite the wind was nearly blowing me off the road

Hi
No problems with Davids bug apart from an oil leak from a new remote oil filter fitting, I tightened it up when we arrived, it didn't leak a drop again until the drive home.
We decided to fill up on Friday afternoon after watching the racing, we went into Nambucca and queued up at the Caltex only to find that they didn't sell 98, so we had to go into Macksville to get 98, is there any other servos in the area beside United?
Ian forgot to mention his brush with the law, we (Rose, Ian and us) all left Valla together, they picked on him to breath test, the only teetotaller in our group, not that we were over the limit but it struck me as humorous.
Steve
Well I fiound out early about the engine, had all but talked myself into giving the rebuild a go myself but got cold feet and took it down to Nymeyers @ Belmont, he asked all the normal "trust me I'm a doctor" questions and I told him how good it had been going till the disaster, when I mentioned that it was just a standard 1600 twin port I thought he looked at me kinda strange. Got a call from them this afternoon, it's a 1300 and it's stuffed, seems it had been bodgied up by someone b4 I got it, the mechanic was surprised it had gone 4 as long as it has (I've had it since '05) as liquid metal or some such thing had been used on the case 2 get the mains to seat / fit properly, anyway I have another 1600 twin port (I Think 🤪) here that I am taking to him in the morning to see what condition it's in, see how I go.
Lee, just so you have something to read here's a copy and paste about my troubles, hope you have a sympathetic ear, I'm looking for as much sympathy as I can get. 🤪
Arrived at the Shell servo at Heatherbrae at 9.45am ready to tag along with the combies, filled up with petrol and went to pull away from the pump, no clutch, the cable had broken at the pedel end (my you beut stainless cable had chucked it in after only 18 months ) luckily I managed to start it in gear, 3rd, and got it up to our office/workshop about 2 k's up the road, tried repairing it for an hour or so, not successfull so toddled off to the boating place down the road and got a new cable made up, had to improvise down at the box end but eventualy got going about 2.45pm (buggy aroused a bit of interest up on the forklift with me working and cursing under it). So off I go heading north, little wench flying along better than ever before, 110 and I'm cheering. Pulled in for a comfort stop somewhere after Bulahdelah (old blokes bladder ya know) noticed that the bottom just touched going across the road edge drain, off I go again and within 1 k I notice it's just not performing as well, pull over at an energency phone to check, no sump plug (guess thats what I heard hit back up the road, Bloke in a white hatch back pulled over to see if I needed any help (thanks Steve I owe you big time) Steve drove back to the rest stop and found the sump plug (I woulda bet my leftie that it would never be found again) ended up NRMA taking it to the 24 hour at Nabiac, toped up the oil, got it going but when I heard the loud knock decided that was my weekend stuffed so contacted numers 1 and2 sons and they came to my rescue with a trailer, back home about 1.30am Saturday.
Now all I can do is look at the picks posted and feel shitie

Lee,
I didn't get to have a chat with you but passed your beetle a few times over the weekend. I travelled from Wagga up the Hume Hwy to Goulburn after work Thursday and stayed there the night, left at 4am Friday morning and headed to Thornleigh Maccas. Then traveled up the F3 onto the Pacific to Nambucca Heads with some other dubbers. Trip up was great, awesome weather most of the way. Trip back was great for the first few hours but then windy and wet the rest of the way home. It was all worth it of course - what a fantastic weekend. I'll definitely be there next time too!! 😵
Had a great run up on Sunday morning but it was a bit rattly when I got there. Took the rocker cover off 3 and 4 and noticed I'd broken a rocker clip! Fencing wire to the rescue when I found that no-one had a spare clip - even trawling through the swap meet garnered no results! Ran faultlessly all the way home. Fantastic day out! Good to see so many bugs and can't wait for 2012!
Now to fit some solid rocker gear.......
