yes you will need to go to the dealers to have a new key re-chipped to suit your car.
a key can be ordered for your car from the head office in sydney by using your VIN number, but it will still require chipping!

I think you might be lucky. My '95 Golf doesn't have a chip in the key, so a locksmith should be able to fashion you a key, if you have the key number written down in your owners' manual. '95 Golfs have the electro-pneumatic locks that are operated by turning and holding the key; nothing much more to it. They don't even have remote locking. The newer Golfs - the '98-on Mk4, the '04-on Mk5, have the more intelligent smart keys and remote locking.

If your locksmith can't help you, or you don't have the key number, you'll have to contact your Volkswagen dealer. There are four in Perth nowadays - Osborne Park Volkswagen, John Hughes at Victoria Park (they've been around the longest and are probably your best bet), Wangara Volkswagen (only been around 12 months), and Welshpool (Commercial VWs only I think).

is the car locked? if its open, you can remove the key barrel from the drivers door lock, theres a number stamped on the side, thats the key number, a VW dealer has the decipher/cutter to make a new key from that. if what phil says is right you are home n dry in about a week!

Thanks guys
Bought the car from second hand dealer, car had no books or spare key. Will chase up Vw dealer tomorow hopefully just need to reorder new keys. Hopefully who ever stole the bag want come back to our house and use old keys to try and steal the car. Thieves were caught on security cameras and hopefully cops can catch them.

Yes as Jon says, the VW dealer will have to remove a lock barrel and match a new key if you don't have any numbers to start them off.

If you are worried about the possibility of the thief returning with your key and stealing the car, the VW dealer could replace all the lock barrels and fit you with new, different keys. However that would involve replacing the ignition lock, both doors and the rear hatch. Can be done, but it would be a much more expensive job. Ask the dealer for a quote on it; you'll have to decide if it's worth it.
