Hi guys,

Out of curiousity, how much room is there between the top of the transmission and the body sheet metal from the rear parcel shelf.

I have a kombi transmission fitted in my type 1 chassis at the moment, but i doubt it would be much higher, As its more 'boxie' then overall height chunky i guess?

I will add 2 inches to the measurement for the lift kit... Just trying to find room for things :P

I would do it myself, but the body is off the pan and the pan is in the garage and would involve me knocking down the fence to bring the body back out the front 😂

Thanks for the reply waveman! Its certainly pretty tight in there isn't it... ah wells.

so probably 90mm clearance with the 2 inch lift kit... Definitely not enough for what I had in mind... i don't feel like mutilating the rear parcel shelf either... simply cause i'm lazy.. I'll workit out 😏

Not much room Chris...

many times when working on My semi auto gearbox I had thought of putting a door over the gearbox which would have made adjusting the clutch servo etc much easier..
very easier...

Not enough room for an oil cooler either.. lol
above the gearbox My body also has a 10mm thick blue yoga mat glued to it for insulation and noise reduction..

OK... You got Me.. that photo shows two clutch arms??

cheers

Lee, the shorter of the two clutch arms is a modified one which they are offering up for comparison. In the thread which I stole the pic from they were saying something about shortening the clutch arm for some reason, presumably they wanted the pedal throw to be shorter although I can't imagine why.

that would be harder on the cable too with a big clutch could be bad news

Just went and measured my Baja for you Chris 👍👍👍

It's 150mm minimum from the top of the gearbox to the underside of the shelf. That's measured from the top of the 'diff' section of the transaxle, which looked to be the highest point.

Bear in mind that this is a swingaxle box though. And ever though the Kombi boxes are boxier they are also higher too. There is still a reason able amount of room under there though, especially with a body lift. You must also take into account that there are things that run through this area too. Accelerator cable, clutch cable and arm, the fuel line depending on how it is run, cables to the starter and the starter itself are all under there.

If you don't mind me asking what do you want to use this space for?

I was eying off the room under the back of my buggy, as even with no body lift there is massive clearance between the box and the body. 🥷

Chris, there is a fair bit of room - around 100mm at a guess. I have my remote oil cooler mounted above the transaxle with no problems so far (been about 8 or 10 years) - see photo.
