Hi all,

Could someone just tell me what the differences are between a 1600 twinport from a bus to a bug?
I understand that some of the tinware has to be changed but just wondered if there was anything else?
Sorry if this has already been asked but I had a look and couldn't find the answers.

Cheers

Not sure on what year bus it came out of but it is going into my 1974 bug.
I will get the engine number written down in the morning to work out the year.

Cheers

It will go in, the 1600 engines from 73/74 buses had extra tin just take it off
you might need another air cleaner otherwise i think it should fit no probs

Bus type1s just had the different air cleaner and muffler as mentioned above and the mounting bosses tapped for the hanger cradle

If its from a 72 or later it will have a different breast plate to suit the wider type 4 engine bay

Thanks for your help everyone.
I found the engine number and it reads something like PB150??. Could someone tell me what this means?
From reading on the net it looks like twin ports are supposed to say AE or something but obviously this one doesn't?

That # may be issued by the local transport dept, may have been rebuilt with a new case and a new (non vw) number issued.

The later bus tinware '72> has different front AND rear breast plates, originally a different exhaust, although chances are it will be a beetle exhaust, so generally all you need to do, is fit your tins front and rear, and the air filter also from the beetle, but to remove the rear engine support bar, the exhaust may need to come off, also could be a difference with the generator and/or alternator, depending on what is on each engine, kombi should have a 38 amp generator not 30 amp like a beetle, so the voltage regulator is deiierent.

Cheers for the extra info.
The Kombi engine has a 38 amp generator and the beetle had a 30 amp generator, will it matter if I just stick the Kombi engine in with the 38 or does it have to be a 30 for the beetle?

Thanks,
Luke

Keep the regulator that came with the generator. If you don't have the kombi reg., either buy a new one for the 38A genny or swap complete fan/gen assys..

Yes the long blocks are basically the same; as people have said, only ancilliaries like generator, tinware, exhaust etc are different. Kombi engines also had an additional engine mounting bar at the rear, in front of the exhaust, so you won't need that in a Beetle.

One other minor difference is that the Kombi motor might have a rev-limiter rotor underneath the distributor cap. No big deal - you can leave as is or swap it for a Beetle-style plain rotor.

No-one's touched on the intake manifold - you will need to block off the vacuum take-off point for the kombi's boosted brakes...or just use the centre intake manifold from the beetle motor.
