Hi all.

Last weekend I pulled my engine down to a long block and degreased the crap out of it so I could find the source of my oil leaks.

Also changed the cooler seals (old ones where still quite good), alternator stand gasket and put new thread tape on the oil pressure switch and sender.

I was suspecting pushrod tubes, but when I crawled under yesterday to check how things were going it appears to be leaking higher up than the tubes.

From what I can see happening there is oil leaking from where the barrels slid into the case and from where the head studs wind into the case. Does this mean the head studs are loose? Should I recheck the torque? Should I check the torque of the case halves too?

Does anyone know what the problem is?

car forums. where a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never ever to see the road again. 🥲

Yep. Dog house shroud. And I did get the correct sized ones. 10mm for in the cooler and 8-10mm ones for on the block.

There are paper gaskets for the mounting faces of the barrels to the case 👍

Just some round disk ones...

I have two cars with no oil leaks, it's all in the way you assemble the motor, don't use a gasket under the barrels, use a good quality silicone like loctite gray, also make sure that all surfaces that you are going to use a sealer on are free of all oil and grease, i use a two pack thinners to degrease all the surfaces,no matter how much money you spend on good quality sealants they will not adhere to a oily surface.

I believe its just the different metals and the way they expand and contract..

I degrease under my engine after every trip if there are oil drips or seepage...

My engine doesn't drip oil when parked for up to a week or so..
but there is seepage and its easily cleaned with paper towel..

if You have oil dripping from the engine You do have a good leak
although not bad enough to pull Your engine apart...

I would torque the studs to whatever it says in the manuals...

oil can flow up thru threads if they don't have sealant on them

Heres something crazy! why aren't engines designed with a dry lubrication system?😀 (besides the cooling benefits) Was sickening for me when i thought of the environmental impact at the hyperdome carpark when everyt parking space had a complete one metre squared black soaked oil slick in each parking bay. All that would get washed straight into the drains, and we all know where that leads....

Not that i'm a greenie or anything 😂 and i've chopped down my share of trees....

Maybe because the oil washes away the contaminates left from the combustion where as dry lubrication wouldn't. just a guess as I'm a doofus when it comes to mechanicals. 🤓

Is the crankcase able to breath freely? Is it being scavenged by the carb induction? Or has it been modified and is it blocked off and pressurising so that oil is forced out the weakest points.

Engine has standard breather line up into the standard oil bath filter.

If is leaking around the barrel's there is no quick fix, remove the head's and barrel's and assemble using the correct sealant, as for the dry sump lubrication, it still has the oil running through the engine and will leak exactly the same it's just the oil is in a external tank rather that the sump

i have a 71 standard beetle that had the heads seperate from the cylinders cuz the people who rebuilt it before me didnt loc-tite anything and they loosended up in the middle of a trip. before that happened i had noticed a small leak everytime i stopped somewhere. thinking it was the valve cover like it usually is i cleaned and replaced it. so $2k later i have all the parts to rebuild my engine.

boxes o parts!! 😂
