OK I need some advise on what it may be. Had just driven about 300ks during the day not at one time and the engine just cut out. It would start and then when I accelerate it would cut out again.

I suspected fuel shortage took off the carby and it had a bit of red dusty stuff in it so I cleaned it out and put back together. fired it up Nothing wont start cranking but not turning over. I checked all electrical leads and took off the dizzy cap. cleaned the rotor button and the other bits. Put it back together and bam fired up and runs as it always has nice and smooth. took it for a 20 minute drive no issues at all. Any suggestions?

How long should I get out of a Dizzy and rotor and points its a 1200 engine also what are the replacement part numbers for these and can you pick them up anywhere or only from VW specialists?

and lastly do you think this was even the issue has anyone else seen this occur?

Thanks Guys

Hi
Could have been a loose connection at the distributor/coil etc.
usually this happens when the points wear down....
and short out...

Most probably was an electrical problem..

remember reading about a girl whose beetle used to stop every few days... RACQ checked everything out...

Car went again for a few days...
this went on for a few weeks...
then the Girl asked the RACQ to fix the problem...

it had happened at night time and the RACQ man could see the arcing....
turned out to be the High Tension lead going to the coil
shorting out...
the RACQ man moved it every time He checked the distributor etc... and then it would move back and arc out..

One reason beetles can just stop and not go...
is the rotor inside the distributor... it has a resistor in the top of it... if the resistor burns out.. engine stops....

Hi

it can be a loose terminal on the coil...

pull each one off one at a time and push back on...

also, forgot...
the condenser on the side of the distributor...
these do wear out...
and are very hot where they are situated..
so, they can play up intermittently...

best to replace the distributor cap- rotor and condensor at some time... buy them so You will have them...
also need a spare fan belt and points...
when they are replaced keep the old ones for spares...

cheapest place to buy these are VW parts shops....
not repco auto one or supercheap...

Castrol GTX2 is about $35 for 5 litres at BIG W..

Was over $50 at auto one last week!!!!!!

cheers
