Hi,

Does anyone know anything about taking Baja's on Fraser Island? I enquired with the guy who hands out the permits when I was up there about 6 months ago on a holiday, and he said "no 2WD's on Fraser - full stop!"

I then asked if my mate's 4wd WRX (which is about 2" off the ground) could get a permit and he said "no worries, it's a 4wd!"

Just recently I was speaking to someone who says that buggies go out there regularly! And he thought there might've been some sort of annual pilgrimage that happens.

Does anyone know? After reading in other posts that it might be difficult getting onto the Manx Club forum, I thought I'd ask here first...?

Thanks, Marc.

It certainly has been done, I remember reading an article about a Baja trip to Fraser Island in VW Magazine Australia. Perhaps best to get onto Manxclub and have a look around. Here's an old article from their 2003 trip: http://www.manxclub.org/index.php?name=News&file=print&sid=5

I have heard that all 2wds might have been banned since then based on the theory that they cause more track erosion/degradation than 4wds due to increased wheelspin.

There is a Manx club trip planned for October next year. But you will need to be a member of the site to view the thread.

About the banned 2WDs thing. 2 weekends ago I tried to head up to the local beach spot in my Baja. Unfortunately it was closed that weekend. I ran into a ranger and they said that we could come back when it was opened. Then she looked down at my car and inquired if it was 4WD drive. Of course I said "hell no"
She then promptly informed me that I wasn't allow to go there at all in my car for the same reason mentioned above, because 2WDs spin their wheels to much and do too much track damage.

You can't tell me that a 3t Patrol with 35" mud tyres spinning all 4 wheels is doing less impact then my car! Imagine that, telling someone who is driving the second best beach car in the world (second only to beach buggies) can't take it on the dunes.
Once my buggy is done they wouldn't want to tell me that I can't take my BEACH Buggy on the beach!!!😬

This weekend just past we took my mates old stock height Subie wagon up there. It's a 4WD but has about half the ground clearance of my Baja. And it had no troubles what so ever. Though we did pass an idiot in a Jeep that was bogged on a track spinning all four wheels because he didn't air down 🤪

The rules should be based on the offroad ability of the cars, not the number of wheel being driven.
But we wouldn't want all the 4WDs being shown up and getting all jealous now would we?😂😂😂😂

Thanks guys. I'll have to get onto the Manx guys about that trip. I wonder if they'd let a Baja be a part of a great trip like that?!

Interesting about your ranger story Smiley. I regularly go onto Stockton (with 12 month permit of course!) and wave to the rangers as I pass. I've never been asked whether I'm 4WD or not!! I hope they never ask me, cos I'll have to say the same "HELL NO!!"

Cheers, Marc.

Here's a Baja that spent a week on Fraser last month. I've not heard anything banning 2wd's on Fraser. The Manxclub has many Baja Bugs in the club, and you are more than welcome to join the club.

So the surf lifesaver's 2wd tractors they use to bring up the rubber duckies on any populated beach around the entire nation is not permitted and detrimentally raping Australia's beaches? That would have been my response... i'm a smart arse. 🙂

11CAB, how do you put photos into your post like the ones of the baja?

I can't seem to be able to do it!

To show pictures directly in the forum, they need to be hosted in a gallery like photobucket.

Copy the directlink from the photo (or goto properties and copy the URL).

When posting in this forum click on the post card icon "insert an image". This will launch a POP UP window where you paste in your URL of the photo.

This will show like code when entering your post and you will not be able to see your photos until you submit or preview.

Also the size of the photo on the screen when you grab the URL will be the size of the photo in th forum. So if you grab a thumbnail url, it will be a thumbnail in the thread. Also don't grab oversized photos as they don't display well in forum threads and slow down the rendering speed when updating the thread.

Marc,

You are not grabbing the direct link from photobucket or right clicking on the photo ->properties -> URL.

You are trying to grab the URL from the browser window which is incorrect.

Not sure where you are pulling that address from, but you need to drop the "?t=1292889570". The last part should only be the file name.

If you right click on the photo above and click properties you will see the URL.

Yes it was. I was parked in the carpark though, didn't compete. I still hadn't worked out the fuel pressure problems on boost so it wasn't up to it's full potential! 🙂

Now I have got fuel pressure right, but now I'm spinning up the clutch in 2nd, 3rd and 4th when it's on boost so a stage 1 Kennedy isn't enough. Am going to a stage 2 early in the new year. It's still gets along, but can't go as quickly as I'd like!

I thought I recognised it from somewhere. Mine was there too, parked with the other non-competing dubs off the side of the track.

BTW most of the time it's not the capability of the vehicle but more the person driving it. That's why you see so many 4wds bogged, people believe because it's 4wd it can go anywhere and they're just along for the ride!
