I have a cheap ebay special inverter stick welder which takes a tig torch with gas, polarity has to be changed,
good points: cheap to buy
Good welds now I have a bit of experience
not so good points:
No foot control with it so amps have to adjusted manually, kept fairly low
limited to thin steel, won't do stainless need an AC one for that
Need to be adventurous to get the hang of
Scratch start type, not easy to learn(but I did so really anyone can!)

My advice, if your budget allows get a good one with foot control and AC type to weld more material, can't help with brands, sorry,
My TIG does what I want, that is to weld thin steel, rust repairs, but it is limited, there will be others on here that can give you better advice from a Pro's viewpoint👍

A lot of the expensive machines that i use do not have a foot control for the amps, all manual adjust, as for welding stainless a DC inverter does it with ease, just finnished welding a stainless fitting for our work boat on board with a small inverter, only has a air cooled torch so you can only weld up to about 5MM, my tig at home cost about $4000
but the main cost is the bottle hire and the argon gas.

^^^ what he said, just bought a cigweld transtig 200ac/dc, sells between 4-7k depending where you look
originally i was going to buy a riland/jasic ac/dc tig for about 1k but couldnt justify the risk factor of buying no warranty no backup chinese machine, no offence to our chinese manufacturers but you dont have my confidence just yet, that said i did find one place selling them with 3 year warranty, that tempted me but by the time i found that i had my heart set on something a little more upmarket, as far as budget setups go it might be worth a shot if you want to dabble in ally work

bottle hire should be around 150-200 a year, was quoted 43c a day from a mate with similar setup at home, and the bigger the bottle doesnt mean higher price, the small ones cost as much because they arent as plentiful apparently, i will confirm this when i get my bottle later this week hopefully 🙂
filling is about 150ish - again from the mate from work

also if your working on a car, foot pedal may not be what you want, you can get thumb/finger slides for torches that do the same thing, much easier to use unless its just bench work that your doing

oh, coming soon, hopefully very soon, stidub coolant lines & exhaust 😀 😀

STIDUB - yep its still a work in progress

a few of the boys have bought one of those "chinese" ac/dc tigs and the reports are good but for myself i would be looking for a known brand prob look for a second hand older solid state ac/dc like a cig 200 that you can option up with a foot control. if you ring your local welding supplies they might be able to put you onto something s/h I bought a 3 phase tig from our local that was ex vic tafe foot control miller for not very much at all runs like a dream.
