Most pro dragsters like the big block v8 funny cars run auto transmissions to not break stuff as the drive train isn't exposed to the crazy stresses fast power on and off when shifting a manual through the gears. Good for launching too, high rev dumps with less stress as a high rev manual clutch dump.

The other reason is that they have a surplus of power from those big engines and the automatic transmissions allow them finer control over the power delivered.
