1969 bug - ej20t - need conversion help
florida69vdub - June 15th, 2010 at 12:04 PM

I have a 1969 vw bug that I would like to convert with an ej20t engine.I already know there will be cutting into the firewall and inner fenders and that I also need an adapter plate. My bug is stock and has a swing axle set-up.What i need to know is do i have to convert it to irs, or will i be ok with the swing axle.I have also seen other posts about relocating the gearbox foward....Will that help me?

I would like to stay with swing axle.If i could not stay with the swing axle, Is there any other suby motor that would work better for me?

any help would be great. Thank You!

Louis

Hi Louis,

You can stay swing axle but the main problem with it aside from the handleing issues is they cant be moved forward like an IRS box

this does pose a problem when fitting DOHC engines
you can clearance the bodywork to clear the timing belt covers but its not a pretty option

Hey Joel, thanks for that pic. What size motor is that?

So the only way to neatly hide the ej20t engine is to convert to irs. Whats the easiest way about doing that? I have seen some how too's on other sites and it looks discouriging! Any advice?

that one was an EJ25.
I'd forgotton about the swingaxle 65 rob put the link up for, he did some nice body work to hide it

IRS conversion is a pretty big job as you gotta pull the body off and get the pivot boxes welded in nice and sqaure but if you dont mind going through that it's well worth it

Thanx Rob..... yeah that is some nice work for sure!Well i guess this whole thing is not as easy as i first thought.I would hate to settle for a smaller engine like an ej22 or smaller.Ive heard those engines require no cutting and are easiest to install.I really want the power!
