Hey guys... New to the bug world and just wanted to get a feel for what I can/should do to get this air-cooled moster pulling a little harder.
As far as i know, I have a refreshed 1600 (12v), with 4-1 extractors and a single barrel carby of some kind.
Ive done a few searches and couldnt really find anything else i can so to tickle her up a bit, so if anyone can suggest anything else id be very
greatful.

a twin barrel progressive webber is a good upgrade but fuel economy suffers twin carbs are the best option but expensive.
here are a few threads on getting more out of the 1600tp.

another option is to put a bigger engine in there, the common favorites are the t4 kombi motor and the ej22 subaru motor. both conversion are well
documented on here
Thanks heaps dude. Looks like most of the cheap stuff has already been done. I might look into a T4 conversion but it looks like it might be more
money that its worth to me. This is just a toy for playing in the dirt with.
Thanks again dude.
not a problem you might want to try a big bore kit then and a cam
On a budget the cleverest thing to do is an oil change, tappet adjustment, new pionts, check yer plugs n leads and timing.A bit of a carbi tune - wala
Then at least you know what you've got is running at its best
And if playing in the dirt get a quality air filter and oil it up!
Thanks both of you! Where could i order a 'big bire kit' from and what dies it entail?
All the things you mentioned lohoon are definatly first on the lis though. Thanks again.
its a set of pistons and barrels that are bigger than stock. most vw places carry them in stock
it does mean pulling the heads but you can increase the engine size to 1680 with out machining
are 1679 barrels any good?
I heard they overheat easily and warp causing blowby between the head and the barrel. Is this true?
