VW Rod (Is this the ultimate?)

Caught an episode of Chasing Classic Cars today on Pay. Great story on a 50's beetle converted to a hill climber with a four cam Porsche engine. A guy named Bill Rutan reversed the transaxle mid mounted the engine and created what is perhaps the ultimate Volksrod!

Great site here with the cars story and some great pic's, check the slide show!

What a car. Great read, brilliant vehicle. Love the severe lightening and simplicity

His name is Burt Rutan, many people put VW engines in his planes, the Long Ez is a freak of an aeroplane, looks like a space ship!

VariEze and Long-EZ
The VariViggen design led to the successful[11] Rutan VariEze (pronounced "very easy")[11] homebuilt experimental aircraft designs, in which he pioneered the use of moldless glass-reinforced plastic construction in homebuilts. In 1975 his brother Dick Rutan set a world distance record in the under-500 kg (1100 lb) class in the VariEze, and these aircraft went on to set other world records in this class.[13] They were also the firstaircraft to fly with NASA-developed winglets.[14] The Long-EZ had a range of 2,010 miles (3,230 km), over twice that of the VariEze.[11] The original VW-powered VariEze used by Dick Rutan to set the aforementioned records was the Rutan model 31. The later, standard homebuilt VariEze was the Rutan model 33.[citation needed] Most VariEzes have been powered by Continental O-200 engines.
