Wide 5 Wheel Nut size??

Hi guys

Lucky I decided to check to make sure that the spare wheel that the car has can actually be fitted to the car!

I was concerned that the tapered wheel bolts that are used to fit the Escra's onto the front disc and rear type 3 drums (they both have spacers fitted) would be too long....well, looks like I was correct as they tapered bolts hit the internals of the rear drum and the disc calipers.

The spare wheel is a standard VW wide 5 wheel and fits nicely in the spare wheel bay.

I have attached a photo of the existing tapered bolt. The length of the thread is 24mm and the diameter is 12mm.

Can somebody tell me the thread length of a "standard" wheel bolt? I assume that they are "radius" bolts as opposed to tapered bolts.

Ideally, I need the length to be long enough to fit with the spaces on or I can cut them down if they are too long.

Thanks
Regards
Greg

incorrect wheel nut for a standard wide 5 wheel(either beetle or bus) Should be a ball seat, get 5 standard bolts and keep with spare.

nah, radius is for Porsche. Early Wide 5 use a 90 degree taper and the one in photo is 60 degree by looks of it.

Bolt should be M12x1.5 pitch and no more than 15mm of thread.

Do note tho that any bolt should exit any plate it is bolted into by at least 1.5 threads for correct torquing of the bolt and it not working loose. Mainly a recommendation for short threaded bolts and not longer ones as more surface area creates more friction to hold bolt in place.

Nope wrong again wide 5 use a ball seat nut not a taper nut. Thread size is right for bug,type3 but bus uses m14 x 1.5. Google ball seat nut and look at images to get an idea.

Well can't say I looked at em that close but as I've been playing with such things lately they looked tapered to me.

Apologies if i got that wrong.

On the topic of wheel nuts - what is required for Raiders? I presume that I can't use the standard Wide 5 wheel nuts?

Thanks,

Ben.

Depends on the seat in the wheel and the thickness of the wheel mounting area.

Seat dictates the type of bolt n thickness dictates the bolts thread length.

An alloy should these days come with a hardened steel insert where the wheel bolt goes as the flat style wheel bolts aren't widely used these days. Check supplier if not fitted with these tapered steel inserts.
