Stereos that fit 68 bug without wrecking the dash?
Call me crazy but I don't want to cut my dash out if I can help it. Not a reversible option. And my current stereo in the glovebox is annoying since
I loose my storage space and have to open the lid to change the volume etc. It is in a very well made metal housing which is fine but I'd like all to
be as it should.
Apart from the factory original AM only if I could find one, what standard type radios will fit 68 era bugs? I've looked at those retro lookalike
ones but none play CDs and I don't have an iPod so need one that plays from an sd card or similar. They are also pretty hefty prices and at 60 or
more to post from the USA it makes them a little exxy. Are there any oz suppliers of these sorts of radios? The other issue being the style - US bugs
in 68 seem to have a padded dash and funny fitting, my 68 dash looks like the earlier ones, chrome strip, blanking panel etc. panel size is about
180x45mm.
If I could get an old broken original and refit it to play fm and mp3 (yes it can be done) that would be ideal.
Has anyone done an install of something else that works ok without cutting or otherwise wrecking the dash hole?

I do recall seeing a new digital radio that looked old school advertised in HOT Vw's, I ended up cutting my dash to fit a modern player

I had a look at das resto and they are the same style they sell in the USA but twice the price and no model listed for the 68 bug. About $150 plus
postage from US seller. Can't justify spending that much. Might have to leave as is or wait for a sale.
Did the hole size change between 67 and 68? They all seem to list up to 67 and the 68 onwards. Styles are different but is the size the same?

Why don't you put a bracket under the dash? What are saving the dash hole for, you only need to file it out a bit?

I bought 4 L-shaped generic brackets from mitre 10 mega (bunnings will have them too), and drilled two little holes each to put in some sheet metal
screws to hang the head unit just under the glove box. I actually made a stack, CB on top of head unit, under glove box. Head unit doesn't interfer
with passenger legs either. You will need to drill another bigger hole to pass the wiring through behind as well.
I recently did the same technique on my brother's type 3 variant but in the centre of the dash. With the facia that comes with the head unit, it
makes a non-intrusive tidy setup.
