Bumper bar dilemma
The bumber bars have rusted again.
I want to solve the problem for good.
Do I buy 2 new cheap ones and get them chromed properly
or
Do I buy the the dear ones (about $350- each)?
Are these dear ones good enough to not rust for many years?
The double ender sits outside 24/7.
I realise that the dollars are about the same either way so which way is the best?

My car lives outside 24/7 as well
I have never had good luck with "good repos"
I have had good runs with rechromed bars
Try and buy some banged up German bars. They are thicker. Straightening is part of the process.
What about stainless steel?

Stainless steel is very good and i have a set on my early beetle, but if you deciede to use the chrome ones again simply coat them with a very good
car polish, this will seal any pores in the chrome and they will then last, do this every month, all mine are good after several years.

For me personally, I always get original bars rechromed. I stipulate that I am after a proper show job. Then the bars will be repaired, linished,
copper coated, linished, polished, nickel plated, polished, then chrome plated. You pay extra for the full process, but the end result is something
that will last a very long time. I think I paid $240 per bar for our beetle about 6 years ago.

Thanks so far.
Neither bars are original german.
So, sounds like buying cheapies and getting good chrome is the way to go.
Unless someone has two german front bars for sale?

You should be able to get some second hand genuine bars, the cheap bars are to thin and made of rubbish material, these can distort when they are
getting chromed, still apply some polish as the chrome can still deteriate.
