Starter motor bushing?

I have a 2 litre motor with an 091 box in my kombi. Recently the starter began running a bit slow along with a high pitched whine. A local VW mechanic suggested that it could just be the bronze bushing is worn. I've pulled the starter but I'm buggered if I can get the bush out. Does anyone know any tricks? Also how much side to side play should I expect the starter spindle to have? Mine moves around in the housing a couple of mm's. Is this correct or a sign of wear in the internal bearings?

I use a 12mm tape, just screw it into the bush from the starter motor end and the bush will wind itself out on the tap, works every time. there is only one other bush at the brush end, pull the cap of and check out the brushes while you are at it.

Thanks for that tip. Worked beautifully.
