stroker motor- off the shelf exhaust systems


hi fellow dubbers.
Looking to get a 2nd hand or new off the shelf exhaust and header system for a 2276.

Heads are 044, comp is 8.8, looking to make some good power with little restriction.

I have seen lots of people running the sidewinder. However are there some cheap copies?

Any input would be appreciated.

More info on the engine would help for actual sizes of the system as 044s range from 40x35 valves with sh1t ports to WILD
also what car is it going into.

But yes, there are some cheap sidewinders out there, some fit, some don't. I recommend A1 for quality, you get what you pay for

I have a 'Classic VW Rydalmere' (George) stainless copy of a A1 sidewinder on my ragtop, fits perfect and I haven't had any probs with it :tu:.

Thats quite a statement as I'm sure there are plenty of guys who know what they are doing running them.

Yes the tried and true 1"5/8 merged headers plus mandrel bend into a 3" Magna flow muffler is the one that has historically been the 'utimate' system, but people are running their street cars lower in the rear these days.
I ran that exact system on the street with the muffler laid flat next to the 1/2 head so I could get to the valves, but the flange and exhaust tip were constantly dragging on everything.
A mate just pulled his 1 5/8 merged system off his bus due to the same issue.

1 5/8 sidewinders appear to produce the same power but with increased clearance I personally feel they are a better style of system.

Firstly, as Matt said you need to determine what pipe size you need based off your valve size and cam etc, but A1 seem to be the best.

Rod Penrose stocks the better quality A1 ones but you need to get the muffler made up yourself, just make sure whatever system you get the muffler is located so you can get to the valves withoput having to pull the muffler off.
I'm not 100% sure if they work with the Berg rear traction bars.

I'm personally aiming to get something like the attached made up for my bug.

LOL, you'd be more of a chump running a 3" muffler on a NA motor that has 8.8comp.........unless you love having no torque, midrange or top end power.

I run the classsic vw copy of a A1 sidewinder in stainless on two cars, both are excellent.

C'mon Alan, spill the beans on the rest of the engine combo cause all the info given is speculative.

Any of the correct size sidewinder systems will work not forgetting Vintage speed and CSP Python 42mm.

Don't get carried away with too big exhaust system unless you prepared to up the comp and modify heads and intake system.

I beg to differ with your statement. Craig, My mild 044 headed N/A 2276 engine with mild comp has ball loads of everything everywhere. The OP's engine and mine sound very much alike.

chumpyness aside, out of 5 non-A1 sidewinders I've had anything to do with in the last 3 years or so, 2 have fitted well enough to not leak profusely at the slip joints and flanges......just say'n.

Clearly my sarcasam gets lost in the world of interweb.. I understand where you are coming from Craig but Both dyno tuners, one in Vic and one in Qld told me that it didn't matter what i bolted on after the flange, it wouldn't make any difference, all the power is made in the headers.. and after trying three different combo's it seem's they are right. If you have any ideas how i can get even more torque and more than 110 on the wheels I'm all ears. :)

Sarcasm or not, we are still assuming the engine combo.

I for one agree to some extent that Mufflers dont make a hell of a lot of difference on so called merged equal length headers, like mentioned the header has done it's business to the collector.

Torque is directly affected by air speed, inlet runner length, port size, volume and valve/seat size and shape, chamber design, exhaust port design, header size and length and indirectly by a lot of other variables within the engine combination.

My vote is the CSP Python, plenty of sizes to choose from to suit
