Type 3 auto. Question

Hi guys. Have my Subie Ea81 about to get a full reco. Also purchased another full auto trans type 3. My old auto is ok but over revs in first gear.

The previous owner of the trans purchased it from a VW wrecker in Sydney and is still on a pallet. He didnt end up using it. He said he was told to just service it and use it.

My question is. As I dont want to have to extract the auto after install if its got a fault, what would you do to it to ensure a long service life.?
I am prepared to take it to a auto trans expert in old autos to spend the cash required but dont want to get ripped off. Am in central Victoria.
