Looking forward to hearing what the knock is.hope its not serious.
Had a beetle with what sounded like poorly adjusted valves or pinging on acceleration, never realy confirmed what it was,but
when we eventually pulled down the engine, couldn't believe the play on 2 of the big ends.........

in a type 3 check the cooling fan bolt, the one with the belt from the generator. usually has a black plastic dome covering the bolt

pretty common problem on type 3 is the fan hub coming loose from the fan. its setup with rubber mounts and is like a harmonic balancer.

Have a look at that first as its common for making a knocking sound that comes and goes. generally the knock is a bit erratic at idle but does vary car to car when it happens.
