Steve C put one in his 1303 - have not heard of anyone doing it to a splitty.

They are a BIG box.
Lots of modifying.

Any preference for a G50?

I've seen alot of folks putting in the subaru 5 speeds, but these were all with subi motor conversions, not sure how it goes with a VW motor (probably ok...)

I think a 915 box is more manageable in size, but all the Porsche boxes are for double jointed rear axles (IRS) with CV joints, not swingers like what I assume is still in you 58 van

I fitted one to my 1303, they are massive and are about $10000 2nd hand these days, check my build thread. If I did it again I would go Subi box

Arron roberts put a 6speed porsche box in in his bay and 800hp. 20b turbo. That still broke on street tires at the drags. He does the. VW autos now that might be worth a look? Most guys with crazy modded vws do all the work themselves with help of their mates or they have 6 figure bills!

Hi Scott, I have never seen one in a splitty but many moons ago I put one in my 76 bay, one of the best things I done to it, I used the standard Kombi axles/CV's and machined up an adaptor to bolt the VW CV's to the Porsche flange, axles were just about horizontal, the gear linkage on the box sat under the torsion housing so the VW selector shaft had a couple of small uni joints added just forward of the torsion bar, and a threaded rod for length adjustment for easy set up, I also used the original Porsche front gearbox mount, ratios were also great, had it in the Kombi for 15 years without issue and logged many miles all over the country as it was our race tow vehicle, never had one issue, it came out of a burnt vehicle and I paid 3.5K but as I said that was years ago, cheers

69 fastback daily driver gone, 66 beetle next resto job,
sold my 76 camper after 21 years years ago and now all the prices have gone up, moving and re building houses has slowed down VW love, Greg Martin
