Bonnet popping 71 Notchback

Hey folks, new member, novice owner and first post.

Recently picked up a 71 notchy and have the bonnet occasionally pop up during travel. I have tightened the cable slightly but was concerned over tightening might stuff the entire mechanism. There doesn't appear to be too much wear in the catch plate, but the plate has some minor movement in it.

Any advice is well received, do you think drilling out the plate rivets and re-securing it with larger ones may help??

loosen the latch screw on the bonnet one turn and listen for a clear click when it engages with the latch.

Also give the cable end and slide mechanism a good dose of spray lubricant. WD40 or CRC etc. Work it back and forward and make sure it moves back freely with he spring. Check that the spring hasn't lost tension stopping it from returning properly.
Once its working well put a bit of grease like lubricant around the slide mechanism. I use Vaseline as it is less messy than grease. Work the mechanism a bit to spread it in. I usually clean the lubricant back off the actual catch after, both to help it latch and so you don't get covered in it every time you open the bonnet.
Tip for working on it is to take out the spare tyre and remove the Spare tyre tray. Makes it easier to see up underneath.
