1975 Superbug L Wheels


Ive been looking for a set of 15" alloys for my car........
i have steel wheels at the moment........could someone help me in finding out what exactly the ET should be.....few have said sure mate 5.5 x 15 any ET would do, but others have told me the 1975 L bug had special ET .....

And is is correct, the larger the ET, the closer in the wheel is to the c entre of the car...

Supers can be real difficult

All depends if you are going to lower your car or not

Ideally you want different ET front and back

There are a couple of pics in my members rice post but photobucket has ruined it

I had 6" ET36 on the front and 6"ET20 on the rear
These were V Force Spider wheels

ET20 sticks out too much on the front and fouls the guard and ET36 sits too far in on the rear and you can have trouble getting centre caps to fit

I then had Porsche Boxster
6" ET50 on the front and 7" ET40 on the rear

6" ET45 fronts would be perfect as the dished centre cap on the front "just" didnt quite fit

Pretty sure stock is 4.5" ET41

most of the mags available for beetles suit a beam / standard beetle and the common ET20 works

A super beetle has a wider track

If you dont lower them they will work - just looks weird

Some notes on wheel offsets were in th below thread (but it was re Type 3's). The 3 common late beetle offsets (for 4.5" rims) are detailed in the Bentley Super/Beetle Service Manual. Yes, the bigger the number, the less offset outward. If the rim is wider than stock, the offset will need to go higher (inward) more to prevent rubbing on the guard; you should be able to estimate by how much.

A pic of some wheels/tyres on a Super.

Front has 165/80R15s on 15 x 5.5" ET36. There is a further 5mm of clearance to the strut from here (so iaw an ET40 5.5" would fit).


Rear has 185/80R15s on the same 15 x 5.5" ET36. Heaps of clearance inboard on the back.


There is no rubbing at stock height on either, and I think 1" lower front and rear will still be fine.

You could probably use these pics to work out tyre width and offset that you want.

PS: sideways pics! Huh! THAT never happened before......

Hi

On my sons 74 we fitted 17x7s ET55 wheels with skinny struts but I filled out the camber holes on the strut base and fitted Mk 1 Golf camber bolts so I was able to narrow the track a little by putting negative on the stock LCA and then dialling it out with camber on the strut base.

If you can afford it go skinny struts makes life so much easier

you will need small struts and new rotors and drums to go the Porsche route

More an idea of what different offsets look like

As said - Supers can be hard to get the right wheels

Personally - i prefer nice looking steelies and hub caps and lower the front an inch or 2 be resetting the bottom cup on the strut
